I think the number lights are broken.

8 car is having the front suspension refitted. So strip down has finished and rebuild is underway.

It seems like Audi let the attrition Pandora back out of the box when they left, felt like things weren't breaking any more but this year it's never-ending lights, wheels, alternators failing. Sucks for the teams, but makes the race interested, painful but interesting.

Because if they aren't illuminated in some way the officials/marshalls can't see them.

Ford have a light on the mirror that shines on the number.

I can remember one year JLOC strapped torches to the doors.
