Do the slower classes have anything to gain by taking part in the qualifying race or is it just extra track time?

Sell track-time to drivers. No one really cares about the Qualification Race. I guess it's still cheaper than renting the track for testing and that's how pretty much everyone approaches it. Even the organisation seems to use it as a dry-run for next month. I only went because I needed the work.

Was still a pretty good race though - top 6 ending up less than 30 seconds apart

Woop, entry list at last!
I only just realised they moved the Classics race to the morning this year and the top 30 ends at 7pm, later than usual. |

Kelvin vd Linde also in the #8 WRT Audi. What a huge risk Audi is taking by placing one driver with two different teams.

Woah,
The Manthey Grellos are pure sex and make my inner Posche fanboy crave for a remake of this A decade ago and almost the same liveries! The Audi squads are stellar, though. Super strong and hard to rank at all. Maybe 8 with a slight edge? Mercs seem a bit unbalanced and I miss one or two names. The car on its own remains to be beaten, though. Yet, BMW is disappointing once again. Same procedure as every year as it seems, maybe they wait until GT3 fades and get their M8 waivered through once more? Aston with a very cool squad, too! Hopefully some race luck comes with them. |

No hate here, we cool
It's just that i find the BMW efforts in the big endurance races either underwhelming(*) or mismanagend to a certain degree. The first is the case this year, the latter was last year. I do find their lineups sometimes very strange or their pick of the works-favorite car in terms of support or risk taking, respectively. The BMW GT3 program is huge, after all, and already approaching the end of lifecycle of the 2nd generation machine, i.e. they are racing close to a decade now. Yet neither Z4 nor M6 won the major races as frequently as their rivals did. Sure, they had a lot of bad luck when they had a strong edge above anyone else. But they never had this subjective might to be the single car to beat very often. It's a bit like Toyota vs. the VAG brothers in the now old WEC. Bad luck one year and half assed the other. Burning Max Martin in DTM and now loosing him to Aston Martin is exemplary imo. (*) NB: I'm aware that Munich might shift their interest towards their WEC/IMSA GTE effort this year. |

Yeah, I think BMW'S effort is definitely on the M8 this year, they're down from 5-6 works cars to two this year. Can't blame them for that.
A few Audi drivers across two teams; wonder if they'll have a 'primary' team each and then be a reserve driver for the other car in case their main entry drops out. The '1 car each' approach is a bit of a strange one IMO but they are very strong entries. I think Mercedes would definitely be the bookie's favourite this year overall, although the Audi and Porsche lineups are arguably stronger on paper, Porsche's less stellar 24 hour record with this car and Audi's lack of two car teams mean everyone has their pros and cons. Fingers crossed for fair BoP and not the usual annual Porsche nerfing. |

It’s never easy being an amateur on this event, so getting through the event in one piece is an achievement
