just thought I'd share:

I love this...

from f1.com's latest "lesser known", this time with Christian Horner

Q: Formula One racing and politics is like …?
CH:
Gary Barlow and Take That - the two cannot exist without the other!

Too true!

It's ironic that 'Take That' were subject to a break away series that was grossly over rated and now spends most of its time in rehab (allegedly).

Maybe Mike Couglan discovered a way to download 72 pages of data from an ECU chip returned to McLaren after tests at Ferrari?

It was 780 pages, and besides, somehow, I believe Ferrari has few tech guzs who'd know how to erase everything.

Its harder than you think to totally erase data so that there is no remaining trace.

Well, I am a kinda of computer educated person, and I know it is difficult, but any good software/hardware engineer can delete stuff without trace and I'm Ferrari has well trained staff - especially when they use ECU that they know will be returned to McLaren.
Even if they don't, I believe they would hire an outside specialists.

Been struggling to find a new angle on this story lately, but todays story about Prodrive F1 , values the McMerc F1 design at $100 million. So whats the Ferrari worth?

OK! So now Stepney and Couglan will say in their defence that this was all a Machievelian Ferrari plot so they didn't have to use the MerMac/Microsoft ECU and could therefor keep Traction Control.
You can tell everyone is quickly getting bored with the midsummer break.

Well, maybe you could ring up Mike Coughlan and ask him how much he wants for the stuff he had!

In re: "erasing." The actual fact is, once it is on your computer, the data can be extracted. There are a number of companies that specialize in this work doing restorations of data on damaged computers or assisting in criminal investigations to retrieve "deleted" data. They are remarkably successful at this...

As far as i am aware the only way to permanently erase data from a hard disk is to perform a low level format or of course to take a sledge hammer to it and reduce it to millions of tiny pieces.

Peter Mallet is in the process of doing the latter I think.

So these 'shredders' are next to useless then?

I think I started this data thing for a but just to put it into perspective we are talking about programable chips not disks or solid state magnetic data devices like USB drives.
The only reason the chips would have to be read is to ensure no one had reprogrammed them. As I understand it they are just like the ECU chip in your road car if it has some form of electronic control. The reason that a common chip is specified is to make it immpossible (or very hard) to run an interupter to provide traction control.
Some data can be recovered from even a low level format hard drive unless fresh data is overwritten to it.
IMO this control ECU thing is another atempt by the Luddites to turn F1 into another dumb control formula, but that argument is for another thread.

Lol.

Harold Shipman was the last high profile case of recovering files like this.

Let's hope it doesn't turn out quite so badly for McLaren.

I was also wondering at what point will Coughlan and Stepney be invited for 'Tea and Bikkies' by the FIA.Apparently they have to give them good reason as to why they should stay in F1.
