Like I promised: my own version of the new Daytona road course. This is only the 'short' version... I'm still pondering about the long 24 Hours' version.

In all my sudden enthousiasm for airport circuit, I drew up another one. This time at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam. It is appropriately called Circuit Schiphol Amsterdam.
The start-finish straight is about 800 m long. The first turn is a 90-degree right (1), leading onto another straight, about 1.000 m long, with a right-hand kink (2) in the middle. The next corner is a 90-degree left (3), immediately followed by a 180-degree right (4). After that, there is a left-hand hairpin (5). A straight leads upto the slowest part of the track: a fast left (6) and a slower right (7), a right-hand kink (8), followed by a right-hand hairpin (9). The next corner is a 90-degree left, leading onto the back straight, which is about 1.000 m long. A 90-degree right (10) and another right-hand kink (11) follow. A 90-degree left and a right take you back onto start-finish. Tell me what you think! . |

You don't believe in run-off areas, do you Royksopp? There must only be a matter of a few metres between the track at Startkurvan and Karusell! Or Hansen and Gislaved.

Look at most of Royksopp other redesigns. He doesn't really believe in much of anything. Nothing is sacred.

Here's my Anderstorp modifications. Not too much of a difference, with the most extreme modifications at Gislaved. I turned the Norra and Laktar curves more like the last two corners at Barcelona, and reprofiled the turn after them (which I renamed in memory of Ronnie Peterson) in the style of Barcelona's Repsol bend. I also rotated the internal straightaway more toward the runway straight and tightened Hansen to make room for the paddock.

Here is my attempt (actually second attempt, first track would post because I couldn't get it smaller than 400 by 400) at Daytona. Here is a legend for the multitude of colors seen on my track:
Black = CART, F1, and short track. Yellow = CART track only. Green = F1 track only. Red = Short track only. Blue = Pit road. I am planning on doing the Anderstorp challenge next, so look out for it. |

Just as an addition, this is a 3-D rendering of my Anderstorp redesign. the structure in the club paddock is an aircraft hangar, which I can't believe they didn't have at Anderstorp in the first place. If the circuit would want to host a Grand Prix in the future, just parking the planes off the runway straight just won't cut it.
The Södra turn in the foreground will be reprofiled to resemble the old Peraltada at Mexico City. The grandstands on the runway will be temporary, obviously. Last edited by Fish_Flake; 23 May 2003 at 23:40. |

The problem I can see with that, Fish, is that a lot of VIPs are going to want to fly in and out on race weekends.

Fine then. Move the grandstands to the infield. Nothing besides those bleachers ever touch the runway, so that's an easy solution. Max and Bernie probably wouldn't like having no seats on the pit straight anyway.
What's your take on the track itself? Last edited by Fish_Flake; 24 May 2003 at 04:00. |

Luxembourg challenge:
I don't think I technically have 2 hairpins here... oh well The track goes counter-clockwise, and is located southwest of Luxembourg just off the A6. |

You could do, it just depends on how you look at the track and what radius a corner is before its considered to be "a harpin" as opposed to just "a tight corner".

Nobody's posted for a few days, so I guess it's time for a new scenario. Note: All locations and events are fictional.
A young hotshot driver from the South American nation of Uruguay has made his way up the European junior formulae, and is the newest sensation in Formula 1. To bank on his popularity, The Automovil Club del Uruguay has been promised a date on the grand prix calendar on the grounds that a suitable circuit is constructed. After exploring many options, the ACU decides to invest in an upgrade the old circuit outside Montevideo. The Autodromo Gonzalo Rodriguez (as the track will be christened after the refurbishing, in the memory of the Uruguayan driver who was killed at the CART Laguna Seca race in 1999) was built in 1953 with the hopes that Uruguay would field a racing pedigree rivaling neighboring Argentina's. It was a short, fast track, 2.13 miles long, consisting of two flat-out sections connected by a wide hairpin on one end, and a banked double-apex corner on the other. Its heyday came in those early days, when the track held non-championship events in both grand prix and sports car races after they ran in Buenos Aires. After big-time racing left Argentina upon Fangio's retirement, the track disappeared from the world stage. It appeared to be on the brink of a renaissance in the early 1970s, though, with Argentina and now Brazil boasting drivers with credible resumés. Unfortunately, interest with the public waned with the lack of a Uruguayan contender, and the track last held international events in 1977. In its current state, the Autodromo is in great need of repairs if it is to host Formula 1. The track is both too short and too fast for Formula 1. There is no runoff in both the sweeping turn 4 and the banked turns 5 and 6. The paddock is too small. When the circuit was built, its location was out in the open; now, the urban sprawl of Montevideo has left the track little room to expand. The rules for this scenario are as follows: The track must be expanded to at least 2.4 miles long, and it must meet FIA Level 1 regulations, meaning proper runoff must be added. The circuit muck have a permanent seating capacity of at least 60,000; The massive covered grandstand that currently exists holds 25,000. All this must be done on circuit property, inside the yellow boundary line. The circuit was built on reclaimed wetlands; current environmental laws call for the removal of the wetlands only when the same area of reclaimed land is replaced somewhere on the property. Finally, it is recommended, but not required, that a club circuit of a length between 1.2 and 1.6 miles is added. Good luck. |
