And for all you space viewers.. If it's not foggy or cloudy..

First Britcar 24hr for me and the first time to Silverstone, hoping to arrive mid Saturday afternoon due to working in the morning.

Excited and a little nervous,is there anything that i can bring that would help that isnt in the usual marshal kit,and can you get back to your car during break as I was going to bring a sleeping bag to take a power nap,if not i will power nap on post(during break)

Don't be nervous, it's a great experience
I did it at the end of my first years marshalling and thoroughly enjoyed it, tho I did struggle by the time the clock ticked around to Sunday lunchtime (I was on startline, we had one massive incident right at the start and then nothing else for 23hrs).
Not sure on the arrangements at each post, but for the last couple of breaks, I crashed out in the passenger seat of my car with a sleeping bag over me.

As others have said, daft as it sounds, I'd highly recommend a pair of sunglasses, daytime if it's sunny (obviously..), but for the night time , when there are cars heading at you with 8million candlepower headlights, it's a bit of relief. Also, I would take several layers of clothing that you can put on/take off as it suits you, as it can get a bit chilly ater xx hours on post, in the early hours.
Above all, enjoy it, personally I loved the night time racing, and the atmosphere as it goes into Saturday night to Sunday early morning was great.

A head torch is a good idea (if not, just any torch-some parts of the circuit are pitch black at night), spare overalls if you've got them, pocket radio & headphones so you can keep up with the race and more food & drink than you think you'll need-better to take some home than run out!

And something that may sound obvious but warm clothing regardless of daytime temps it WILL be cold at night..

First timer next weekend at the Britcar event and only my 4th ever marshaling event. Just a few questions...

- Still haven't received my passes after signing up at the BRSCC Midlands site a few weeks ago. Is this normal?

- Is it worth taking a BBQ or do you not get the time to cook? What kind of food do people usually take with them?

- Should I prepare for no sleep or do you get a few hours over the weekend?

- Everybody says to take lots of coffee... how much? Is there any access to hot water at the circuit?!

- Apart from sunglasses, what should I take that I wouldnt have normally thought of??

Cheers!

Simon,

Tickets, suggest you PM roys1 as, I believe, tickets have been sent out.

BBQ, Silverstone, October.
seriously, I don't think you'll really have time.

You should be on a rota whereby you do 4 hours on and 4 hours off. Never good to try and go without sleep.

Two flasks of coffee should do, so you've got at least one full one.

Small radio for the commentary. Will tell you much more than scanners.
Alarm clock. You don't want to be late on shift!

See you there.

All that, however.......

I would definatly take a brew kit, stove kettle and brew kit, as an absolute minimum. If you can then take some form of food you can get hot, even if its bacon butties, then do it. Cup a soups are good.

it looks like the weather will be good...crosses fingers, legs and other appendages.... but if its wet then get back to the diner to get dry and warm and fed, spending 3 days wet and cold wont do you any good if you need to move fast!

now having made it sound like the somme, its a brill event, but will give you the taste for 24hr stuff, or even, .......

rallies

BRSCC Tickets arrived yesterday, I think. Give it 'til your postie has been on Monday, and get in touch with them if you still have nothing.

People generally go on a 4 hour on/4 off schedule so you should get a couple of goes at a 3 hour kip (allowing for returning from/to post & eating etc.), but you may find it negotiable. e.g. last year, one of my mates wanted to do all night, and I fancied the sleep, so I stayed 'til 1am, and then we swapped 'til 9am, so I got nearly 8 full hours sleep, and he got his full night shift. One guy did all day Saturday, and then though the night on pit exit before having to surrender at about 10.30am to go and get some kip.

It's up to you if you want to cook, but last year the weather was so bad, some people lost tents, and had to kip in the pit office or the refreshments suite. You'll probably want to stock up on snacks (sandwiches, bags of crisps, p**k p**s, etc.) to take on post with you, and sugary drinks might help keep you awake and alert. If worst comes to worst and you can't cook at all, the paddock diner should be open, or you could always go off circuit for food.

You may want to take an AM/FM radio with you, 'cus if you end up on yer own during the night, you might want to listen to the commentary and keep up with what's happening (not everyone's cup of tea, but if you do, I believe they turn the PA off overnight and it goes out on radio instead).
