Just watching the race, it's funny because the concept of one Am, one Pro makes for some fun racing.

Likewise the diversity of cars is pretty good considering there was only 10 cars running.

I also enjoy the Goodwin/Palmer RLM commentary of course, the format of the races are great. No need for pit stop penalty times, just an hour (roughly) per driver and having to have a Am in each car.

Nice and simple to follow format for people new to racing.

Biggest downfall: car count.

If they can get to 20 cars, this series will be great

This series and the Blancpain GT sports club both show that Am on Am racing is often very exciting.

The Aston and Porsche battle has been great

I fully don't understand people's hate for Am drivers

It's much easier to like Am's in GT3 cars. :-)

I think Mike hits the nail here. The hate isn't really about Am drivers, it's about 3 or 4 specific am drivers in cars they can't handle. Pew, Brown, Krohn for example. I know they fund cars, but Krohn and Pew are continually causing yellows. Brown may have less accidents but he's often slower than GT cars. At least he can say he funds 2 cars, which helps the grid.

But GTE-Am and GT3 Am drivers tend to be less of an issue.

Totally get your point about being class specific. My point is in this context where every car has an Am driver it makes for some fun battles.

I agree Ams in multi class racing can be a pain

While numbers have been low in GT3LMC this year, I see no reason to have P3 in ELMS and GT3LMC too..

Apparently, LMP3 is so popular that the ACO sees the need to cap the numbers in ELMS and go to a promotion and relegation system with the Le Mans Cup being the lower division for the excess LMP3 teams to race in. OK…

It's cheap. I don't feel it has a place in these series'. But who knows, maybe it helps the ACO sell the GT3 series they have.

Promotion and demotion doesn't work in a series like this because budgets change. What if you can afford to run the Michelin Le Mans Cup, and you manage to win, and therefore get promoted to ELMS. But you can't afford to run ELMS (more races and double length!)? Are you allowed to stay in MLMC?

This announcement is clearly why the ACO had a fit about he 24H Series, but I don't think the ACO solution is a good one.

While not a regular occurrence this actually happens in stick and ball sports from time to time, with teams being allowed to stay in the lower division.
The question is then: who will get their spot? Will only the last 4 from ELMS be relegated or will the 6th placed team from MLMC be promoted?

On the budget question don't gentlemen drivers tend to find most of these cars? And if so what if the drivers simply don't want to change series. Can't they just find another ride with a different team if available. In other words telling a team where they can and can't race doesn't make a lot of sense when the driver is the one doing the funding why don't they just delegate the driver instead.

True, but you can easily get around that with a license system a la BTCC or Aussie V8s. Make the drivers "win" the license to compete in ELMS - if he doesn't have one or isn't granted a wildcars by the ACO, then it's no dice.

I don't see why teams/car owners cannot do both series - or the Creventic series as well.

If the number of cars is too much for ELMS, let them qualify. Competition will determine who gets to play in the big race and who will be 'demoted' to the support race (if they wish to play there of course). Teams/car owners are perfectly able to choice where they wanna run, sanctioning bodies/series organizers do not need to do that for them. But again, it's the ACO...

LM support races

There will be two support races for the Michelin Le Mans Cup at Le Mans this year. One on the Thursday at 17:30, and the other on the Saturday at 11:30.

Total entry is also increased from 42 to 46 cars. Auto entries for full season LM Cup teams, and preference given to teams running in ELMS, AsLMS, Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup and the Weathertech Sportscar Championship.

Both races are 55 minutes with a compulsory pit stop.

The standard race time this year is 2 hours. Reckon they have gone for shorter races here for two reasons:

1) A 2 hour race would be difficult to accommodate on Saturday morning with the big race warm up and the combined Porsche Carrera Cup France/GB also running, and

2) They can do a 55 minute race without refuelling (I think), so the pit arrangements are much simpler.

55 mins is a nice length, and twice the chance for each team to get a podium so will keep people happy.

Nice to see this sprint format style on Le Sarthe, bit of variation before the big deal
