Now there was a larger than life character. Good old Gerry. He certainly worked hard and played hard, just how most people expected racing drivers or other sportsmen to be

Keep these pictures coming, it's nice to look back at what I see as the pioneering days of top saloon car racing

"Alec Poole was the British Touring Car Champion in 1969 in a Mini Cooper S. He explained that the trick in qualifying was to perhaps not get out of the way of the bigger class Escorts and when they slowed slightly, to tuck in behind them for the all important tow! He also spoke briefly about a fearsome machine Alec raced known as the Complan Turbo Mini. That car grew from 1300cc to 1430cc during development and ended up with huge arches and a Clubman style front and as Alec explained, there were teething problems but when it went, it really went! This car was reputed to have in excess of 180bhp from an A-series turbo in 1971 and it was apparently sold to the Carribean, as was his next project, a 4.5 litre P6 Rover."

BRSCC - A Hard Days Fright 1964 (with bonus video after "the end" ) uploaded to YouTube 1st Sep 2021.
"This is another Period Roscoe Films Production of BRSCC racing cars in 1964. Famous drivers and cars all racing and crashing during 1964 at circuits that then had little or no safety protection. This is dedicated to all the volunteer marshals and the BMRMC (BMMC) without whom our racing wouldn't be possible." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxWl1JnM0cs The 1-litre saloon race at Castle Combe 15th August 1964. |

From 'Sporting Minis' :- Very sad to hear about the passing of Jon Mowatt. Mini racer in the late 60s and flying the flag for the Mini in the British Saloon Car Championship in the 70s. RIP https://www.facebook.com/thesportingminis/ |

That looks like George Whitehead in the WRA Anglia, and having raced against quite a few times back in the 60s, that would not have been usual. All I can think is that he was thrown off by the antics of the Mini driver, because back then some of the really fast guys could get their Minis in all sorts of attitudes whilst cornering, and if you were following fairly closely you could often find yourself facing the sides of their cars, which would be most off-putting, to say the least! George was a very good driver, and fast too, as well as being an excellent motor engineer. Over the years, I and other competitors bought quite a bit of stuff from at his engineering shop down the road from Stanmore, Middx. |

Thank you Mike! I couldn't for the life of me remember George's surname - I recognised it as the WRA Anglia.
Good to get the perspective of those racing at the time as opposed to just watching, like me. |

Not sure which corner or circuit it is but if it is the hairpin (Druids?) at Brands then most of the faster guys always hooked the right front wheel over the raised but relatively narrow kerb to pull the car round the corner. Allegedly!

It certainly looks like Druids, Peter. I cannot recall George driving North of Brands, although he may have raced at Mallory.

Did Mallory always have the raised infield at Shaws Hairpin? (It certainly has as long as I can remember). If so the picture can't be there, so must be Brands (or Lydden?)

It's possible, John, although I did race there a lot as It was by far my and my car's favourite circuit and I do not recall ever seeing him in my races. It's possible, of course, but it might also have been when he was racing in other disciplines to Special Saloons. |
