Good to hear its fixable. Good luck.

As an aside I noticed an article about this weekend at Teretonga in the NZ press. Didnt realise that Teretonga is the oldest circuit in NZ. No name checks for our mob but it talks of "A sizeable contingent from the UK has travelled to NZ for the event...."
Good value meeting with weekend passes NZ$40.... thats less than 20 quid for the weekend.
In case others cant access the Otago Daily Times:

Oldest circuit a fitting venue for classic racing

Classic motor racing takes centre stage at Teretonga Park in Invercargill this weekend.
Two full days of action get under way as the Ascot Park Hotel Classic SpeedFest takes place at an appropriate venue, the country’s oldest motor racing circuit.

Five classes of historic racing cars – pre ’78 saloons/Historic & Vintage Racing Association (HVRA), Formula Junior, classic saloons, Formula Ford/Libre and vintage racing cars, plus the Noel McIntyre Drainage Club Saloons, will add up to a fantastic weekend of action and entertainment.

Spectators are welcome to wander through the pits, look at the cars and talk to the drivers about their machines. International drivers are starting to return to the event post-pandemic with drivers from the United Kingdom, Australia and Denmark among the entries.

The pre ’78 classic saloons/HVRA have combined this year with the pre ’78 saloons providing interest, including Rodger Cunningham of Te Anau in his Mustang and John Munro of Coatesville in a Daimler XJ6.

The HVRA competitors add some big banger cars. Brothers Leon and Kyle Hallett line up in their Falcon and Mustang respectively, along with fellow Mosgiel driver, Paul Coory in another Mustang, plus Gary Johnstone, of Rolleston, in his Jaguar.

The class will compete for the Brian Crosbie Memorial Trophy in their finale, a six-lap handicap race.

Formula Junior was a stepping stone to Formula 1 from 1958 to 1963 and were driven by many of the world’s best drivers. A sizable contingent from the UK has travelled to New Zealand for the event with a brilliant line-up of cars from the period.

Dunedin’s Steve Ross will pilot the iconic PDL Mustang 1 in the classic saloon races while Porsche drivers Guy and Marcus Stewart, of Christchurch, and Mike Baker, of Picton, will be prominent.

There will be real variety in the Formula Ford/Libre field with Steve Heffernan, of Invercargill, one to watch, along with Gerald Duncan, of Cromwell, in the SID. Young Southland driver Jacob Begg joins the field fresh from competing in the South Island Formula Ford Championship.

Paul Coghill, of Dunedin, is always competitive in the vintage racing car class while an interesting entry in the class is Jac Nelleman, of Denmark, in a Mallock.

Nelleman was the Danish Formula 3 champion in 1976 and 1977 and entered the 1976 Swedish Grand Prix in a Brabham run by the small RAM team in a field that contained names like Scheckter, Andretti, Amon, Lauda, Hunt, Fittipaldi and many more superstars of the sport.

Many of the south’s best come together in the Noel McIntyre Drainage Club Saloons with Jordan Michels (MARC Mustang), Liam MacDonald (Falcon) and Dion Dawson (Saker) among the entries.

Saturday’s programme is expected to start at 10am with qualifying for each class followed by racing from about noon. Sunday’s programme will start at 9.30pm with a full day of 17 races.

Discounted weekend passes are available from Auto Centre, Tweed St, Invercargill or E Hayes & Sons, Dee St, Invercargill and Harrisons Supplies, Mersey St, Gore — $40 plus any applicable administration fees.
Day passes and weekend passes are also available at the gate during the event.
Children 14 and under accompanied by an adult are free.

When did you buy the oil seal?

If recently it may simply be poor quality control for the seal ... there seems to be a lot of that sort of problem around these days across the automotive world.

Not easy to know when fitting.

Well done Iain, good job. Just one warning, I remember that the area you're in the short ton is still in use. Hope the car is not that heavy, light is right!

Not easy to know when fitting.
According to Automotive News China, the shady side of the People's Republic is set to sell $45 billion worth of counterfeit auto parts this year. Those include high-volume pieces like spark plugs, brake pads and steering components as well as oil seals and airbags. All told, the report says that China is responsible for a hefty 83 percent of the world's counterfeit parts, leading the top three producers by a wide margin. The report goes on to state that Taiwan and Thailand are responsible for five percent of the pie each, while Japan and Malaysia weigh in with two percent each of the counterfeit market.

In many cases, authorities are ill-equipped to handle the sheer volume of rip-off artists. In one instance, a facility that produces knock-off oil seals gets shut down once a year only to re-open at full capacity. That plant had the capacity to produce seven million fake oil seals per year in 2008. Now that number is up to 10 million.

In the case of the seals, the manufacturer uses low-grade rubber and metal to cut costs, and as a result, the fake pieces carry a price tag that's less than half of the genuine article. They're also almost guaranteed to fail.

Meanwhile, legitimate Chinese companies are beginning to fit their boxes with radio frequency ID tags to distinguish their products from the fakes.

A few of the US automotive repair sites on YouTube have been bemoaning the poor quality parts problem for a while now. The challenge is that it seems some are even getting into the OEM supplies and the respected third-party parts vendors.

A dodgy component is bad enough but when it's a 2-cent part that involves 20 hours of labour to strip and replace and then immediately fails again, as may well be the case with so many of the more complicated vehicle designs of the last couple of decades, the situation could be quite catastrophic for used car market.

Indeed, if any of the dodgy quality components are reaching the factory production lines, even the new vehicle market could be extremely vulnerable.

The same sort of problems in the freight market might be part of the explanation for the number of fires experienced by HGVs in recent times although dodgy maintenance due to cost-cutting might also be a factor. (I'm assuming that the reported traffic disruptions due to HGV fires do indeed represent an increase in such occurrences rather than attracting attention because the way they are handled creates more issues than they once did.)

Not sure about 3rd.

The list seems to be in "number of laps completed" order rather than time - so perhaps free practice rather than relative performance?

Aha....I now see what I did there in my haste. In Aus we do it in time order, and in my rush Idid the ass-u-me thing. (In my defence I was also watching Bathurst 12 hour practice on TV, with live timing running there as well. I had multiple tabs running with everything from tenths, NZ and Bathurst open. )
Getting too old for all this multi-tasking malarkey.

OT Again - sorry...

On the subject of dodgy parts ... sort of ...

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/cars/news/...5768977&ei=366

Now call me cynical but what if the part in question had been found to be dodgy enough that it was almost certain to fail and perhap fail catastrophically in some way?

13k Audis and Porsches from a common manufacturing period all failing across the country would be very poor PR.

At best.

Dreadful reputation for quality control in such circumstances.

Far better to suddenly invoke concerns about a supplier's involvement with slave labour in China than to run the risk of worrying about dodgy parts.

Or am I being too cynical?

They will turn it into a good publicity, clearly showing they thoroughly check the car investigating down to the tinyest component trapped far inside a large control unit. And dont deliver any car until it meets the highest standard. End of the story.

So what happened to Iain? Too much rain?

I think you are right but it seems like a very strange way to deal with the situation if the real reason is purely down to Human Rights and, presumably, just recent concerns from a supplier reporting the problem about a small component in a deeply buried larger component.

So who told the US authorities and was there no possibility of coming to some sort of "accommodation" to resolve the problem and complete deliveries rather than hold things up and create an expensive re-work expectation?

Maybe they just don't have the sales demand to make an urgent need to go through the process of completing the import process?

It just seems very odd.

I'm confused because I can't see any confusion in best lap times. For instance, FJ's : #321: 1'16"357, further Iain being 9th in 1'21"179 and Rich 15th in 1'28"025. This is what you wrote Chris, so all is crystal clear, yes?
Editing myself: at last got the picture. Sorry…
