I suspect there is a very long gap between Pierre Phillips (maybe late 1960s/early 1970s) and Nick Colyvas (1990s). Have you contacted Colyvas? If not, try this. Dave Vegher had a BT18 in vintage in the late 1980s in California and would be worth asking. Similarly Jim Miller (Rancho Palos Verdes) and Randy Cook (Palo Alto).

Let me know how you get on and I'll try to fill in gaps for you.

BT18

Hi
I'm a new member of Ten-Tenths, excuse low tech comments..
I have picked up on a string of discussions involving BT-18's.
I can add just a little, although no expert and memory not 100% .
I part owned with 2 others, a BT 18 in the early 70's.
Bought it from Len Ward in '74 I think.
It had a Cosworth 1000 Screamer, which eventually blew.
It was replaced I think with a Delta Downdraft.
Driver was Grant Demster & raced in F4 1975/76 through Uk tracks, and was sold on in 77/78.
Don't know if that fills a small gap in someone's book, who may have known of a Delta Downdraft BT 18 back then, and an explanation..

Brabham BT-18 F2-24-66

Does anyone out there know the whereabouts of chassis number F2-24-66?
This was a Team Winkelmann car and was imported to the US by Fred Opert and owned by Dick Leppla for a while. I purchased the car from Jim Woodruff in 1972 and sold it to Barry Bissiere in 1976.
I'm just wondering where the car is now. It was a beautiful handling car although just a tad under-powered with a Cosworth twin cam in lieu of a Brian Hart motor.

Chassis 24 wasn't a Winkelmann car. It was observed on David Cole's F3 car in both 1966 and 67.

F2-24-66 was an F2 Winkelmann car. I got this information from Autosport magazine.

Can you give me the date and page of the A/S that you got this report from? Thanks.

Dick Leppla had a BT18 with a Cosworth twin cam in 1970. It was red and #90 then. Could well have come from Opert.

Where was Jim Woodruff from?

Could you give me page number and date? I rather doubt this, having been through the whole year pretty thoroughly. Furthermore, the chassis observations in programme notes are from a very reliable source - Duncan Rabagliatti of Formula One Register.

The world doesn't need another ex Winkelmann F2 BT18. There are too many already.

I cant cite issue and page number because it was originally published in Autosport back in the 1980's after I had sold the car.
The F2 in the chassis number rules out an F3 chassis. Whether it's ex-Winkelmann or not is not of importance to me since I no longer own it. I just wondered if anyone knew its whereabouts.

Thanks for that Royster. I suspect that reference in Autosport in the 1980s was wrong because we have several contemporary references to F2-24-66 being the F3 car of David Cole. The Winkelmann F2 cars were F2-22-66 and F2-23-66 so an assumption may have been made that their third car was F2-24-66.

The Brabham BT18 was a multi-formula model, being used for F2, F3 and FB in 1966, but all the chassis numbers started 'F2' regardless of the formula. The next season Brabham changed their numbering system to take out both the formula and the year - so the first F2 car of 1967 was BT23/1 instead of F2-1-67.

After F2-24-66's second owner, who had it from May 1967 to early 1968, it disappears from view. It's quite possible it went to the US via Opert at that point so would have raced somewhere, quite possibly in FC at first, in 1968 or 1969. Leppla ran a F3 BT15 in 1968 and had a FB BT18 in 1970. Then it could have gone to Jim Woodruff in 1971, yourself in 1972 and Barry Bissiere from 1976. For the record, could you let me know your name? My email is allen@oldracingcars.com if you prefer.

Thanks for clearing that up. Alan. I believe your time line makes sense since it agrees with my recall of those days long ago. I'll send you my personal information under a separate e-mail.

John Fenwick, Brabham BT18 etc

I have John Fenwick, Brabham BT18-Ford twin cam winning the Firle Hill Climb, 27 August 1967, 24.52 sec. The car is described as ex-Mike Hawley (Motoring News). This puts the car with Fenwick earlier than stated above?

Some pictures at Revs from Riverside, California, ARRC, 1966, might help with other enquiries:

Fenwick's first run in this car was in a 750 MC Hill Climb at Wiscombe Park on 9 Oct 1966.

Not too sure where this belongs:
Published 23 September 1968:
MONZA, Italy (UPI)--Peter Korda of Switzerland drove his Brabham to victory Sunday in the 19th Italian Formula Three sports car championships with an average speed of 139 miles per hour.
Korda, driving a Brabham, finished 17.8 seconds ahead of Sweden's Ulf Svensson.
