Not a red flag exactly but a delayed start....
A few years ago at a club meeting at Silverstone the race pack, headed by the safety car, was stationary on the grid for a 2 mins silence before the start in memory of someone associated with that race championship who was recently deceased. The safety car driver realised that his feet were getting wet - the safety car was pouring water all over the track! It was hastily pushed into the pits, the pits crew cleared up the mess and the startline team were told not to hurry to put the drivers back in their cars whilst the course car was hastily kitted out with a lights bar as a stand-in. And of course a section of the return road at Prescott is a bridleway and the instruction is to "give way" to horses..... |

Not sure if already mentioned.
The 2000 CART Nazareth race was scheduled for April 9, but the Sunday activities were suspended for a snow blizzard. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-...942-story.html |

Red flag because of a server restart.

At a Jim Russell race meeting, one of the single seaters binned it comprehensively at Mcleans. The driver was still sat in the car when the Rescue Unit arrived. When the crew asked if he was OK, a big grin crossed is face. He then pointed skyward and said "Concorde".
Apparently, East Midlands Airport had just had Concorde arrive for a publicity session. |

I remember seeing a Spitfire over Donington during a race. Managed not to crash though. I have a video which I shout Spitfire as I see it though.

Don’t know if this has been mentioned, but there was a time a race at Oulton had been put under a SC because a helicopter either crash landed or made an emergency landing nearby. The occupants were completely unrelated to any motorsport

Not a stoppage, but practice session at Kirkistown many years ago, 2 cars in the session, one dropped out, the remaining driver gave me funny "what the hell?" looks as he went past the flag post where I'd a vigorous waved yellow out.
Given the movements in the car I think he may have HAD a movement when he went around the corner and narrowly missed the Irish Wolf Hound that was wandering down the middle of the track. |

I've just remembered a "technical red flag" at Rockingham some years back due to the arrival of a helicopter which had not prearranged nor phoned up race control to announce their arrival. As soon as the skids hit the floor, the session restarted and some rather annoyed circuit staff appeared to remonstrate with the pilot!

This was at a BTCC meeting within the last few years. The occupant, who was possibly the pilot, was a previous BTCC driver and he had failed to file a flight manifest and he landed at Oulton Park without the necessary permission. He was arrested by the police, but I cannot remember the outcome. But it did result in a Civil Aviation Authority full inquiry which is available on line. |

I recall the carfest event at Oulton, which was disrupted by a btcc driver.

Found the one I was actually referring to here: https://www.cheshire-live.co.uk/news...-lands-5295696 And of course we all remember that VW race at Brands that was disrupted by that idiot gatecrasher in his road going VW |

I have seen a red flag for a football being kicked onto the circuit, albeit at a test day rather than a race meeting at Brands Hatch.
All those years of public address announcements for children playing football half way up Southbank do have a very real reason! |

I remember this incident, although it didn't actually stop a race (as it had already been stopped) it certainly put the next races back and I seem to remember with shorter times/laps ?

Not a race stoppage but there was another time at Kirkistown where a light aircraft landed on the back straight, taxied down and parked on the grass on the inside of the hairpin. I believe it was actually expected though.

Great stuff - needed some entertaining reading to round the week off. I remember two of the ones mentioned so far, at which I was present - the plane landing at Cadwell and the cars coming down to the paddock at Mallory while the race forming up lap came through the Esses!
There was also the time when the start of a race meeting had to be delayed at Silverstone due to sheep on the track. I haven't been to Loton for a while but deer getting onto the course was always a danger there. I was nearly run over by one in the paddock one time - it was in a severe panic, presumably surprised at loads of people and vehicles in its normally quiet stamping ground! Scott |

Ah that reminds me - they used to have to stop hill climbs at Wiscombe while the pheasants moved across the track at feeding time!

Saddest thing I have seen is a Helicopter landing on the main straight of Oran Park NSW Australia...following cancellation of a meeting due to an on track death :-(

Some years ago at the Phoneix Park in Dublin there was a race stoppage when an somebody was moving about at the start finish line wearing a red shirt. The person on the first flag post a few hundred meters away put out their red flag.....

As Specialists we are very aware of that one - some circuits are more vulnerable than others depending on the way the catch fencing is designed. Before Snetterton had it's fencing on the pit wall we were always asking people in red clothing to either leave the pit wall or cover up or change to another colour........ bad news for Ferrarri!

An ironic one this morning on a bike trackday, going into Edwinas a Trainee rides into the back of his Instructor, putting them both on the ground and bringing out the red flags and an Ambulance.

New to this thread so maybe covering old ground;
Drove to Silverstone for a meeting and was surprised by the number of ;race cars' going the other way. On arrival turned a way as the whole meeting had been cancelled, it was sponsored by The Lords Taverners, and Princes Di was their patron. It was the day she died in Paris. |

I went to a car boot sale that day. It wasn’t cancelled. Different patron presumably.
