Always thought it was pretty cool seeing the classes jumbled slightly at the start. Particularly seeing how long the GT-Am pro guys can hang with the Pro cars.

Absolutely. With 'normal' qualifying at LM you had 4 hours to nail your lap. If your LMP2 ended up slower than a GT because you had problems, too bad. You start where you qualify. That's the point. History now...

Cars not starting where they rightfully should would have been annoying couple of years ago but now in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter anymore. The only thing I'm concentrating now is enjoying Le Mans 24 Hours race for the final time as it should be, as it is meant to be raced (albeit in extraordinary circumstances). There are proper good cars in LMP1 with honest racing, few in numbers but good in intentions. Bittersweet as it will be gone after Sunday, but I'm sure still enjoyable to watch until then - even if the Toyotas disappear to 10 lap lead within first couple of hours. And in LMP2, while mostly sterile, I guess could still provide interest in seeing how far in order the top (Oreca) entry manages, and who wins the likely final ever tyre war, Dunlop or Michelin. I am looking forward to it

Well had to miss the live hyperpole so kept away until the hi lights, was not actually that impressed. The cars that seemed to do well were not those expected from earlier quali and testing, very strange. My thoughts are that some teams seemed to be not trying.
Toyota on last lap was going for it then came across a sunday driver out for a gentle drive.

Well, looks like the distance record won't be in jeopardy, especially if the weather forecast for off and on rain holds true.

Kobayashi abandoned the last lap because he had the lap time deleted for track limits at Tertre Rouge.

outnumbered should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Did Idec have to build up a new tub for either of their cars, or were the crashed ones repairable?

Having a quick look at the qualifying spread. The chart below shows the qualifying lap time by class. Pretty standard spreads with tails.

In three of classes the fastest lap was a lot quicker in Hyperpole. GTE-Pro was a fraction slower and generally there wasn't as much improvement.

The spread of times are really close across all the classes, but especially GTE-Pro. Confirms what we know really.

Just a shame that they will start a lap latter than the other after the job done by the team to rebuild them. Not the spirit I am looking for for endurance race

I mean I get what you are saying in some way but what's ACO supposed to do, break their own rules for sake of spirit?

https://assets.lemans.org/explorer/p...egulations.pdf
10.2.5 Start of a car that did not take part in qualifying practice
Any car not taking part in the session, if allowed by the Stewards, will start the race from the pit lane at the end of the first lap. They will start from the pit lane, after all the Competitors have covered one racing lap and under the supervision of Race Control.

Of course, this could have been avoided if the silly hyperbole wasn't a thing and the former 6 hour quali was still used, but as it is, the officials were doing what they are supposed to

It’s all good that Rebellion have been with Toyota today on one lap pace as we saw earlier but has anyone been following in practice how the two will compare over a stint?

To be honest the Rebellions must have a problem free run and the toyota's both hit problems or them to stand a chance

There's a slight benefit now for the nonhybrids with the larger fuel flow restrictors, but all around Toyota will probably still manage to do faster individual stops just because they are Toyota. Anyway more importantly both can now do 11 lap stints (or theoretically more) in the race, without the fear of being penalized and that's the most important thing

But usually Rebellion manages to crumble away at some point, the last time they had perfect race at Le Mans was years and years ago. That's alright though, privateer teams, even rich ones shouldn't be expected to beat factory cars unless something outside the box happens. It is most likely the final ever race for the team ever so I'm sure they're anxious as hell

I’m not expecting Rebellion to keep with Toyota on race pace but I just hope they are there to pick up the pieces if Toyota do stumble, though the Toyotas do seem fairly bulletproof these days

I think any of the representatives of the Oreca 07 armada have about as equal chances of doing that as Rebellion or getting that 3rd place. But of course it would be a great sendoff, this was my favorite team of 2010's after all

Well it's certainly the first time in recent history (although I'm not sure on 2019, I'm sure that it happened last year too).

In 1997, cars were sort of separated by class, but in an even weirder system, the prototypes started on all the odd-numbered spots, the GTs on the even numbered spots.

And, of course, before qualifying existed at the race at all, cars lined up in order of displacement and/or their category.

What goes around, comes around.

So, I'm not worried about staying awake for the whole of the race (although I had a lousy night's sleep) but can I make it through the unnecessarily long morning warm-up?

All set up and ready for the day....
