I always thought the word "sport" was meant for carrying sport stuff, like bikes and surf boards and stuff. And now I'm sitting thinking about that, it makes even less sense.

I've never put much thought into it, but I do wonder when the term was first coined and what vehicle(s) it was referring to? Now it is pretty much anything not a sedan, coupe, or truck in the US.

In the UK we only started using it in the last decade I think. We always said "jeep" and "4x4", even if it wasn't a Jeep, or four wheel drive. Which I guess is even more wrong.

That’s what I’ve always thought the definition was. But a large percentage of current ‘SUV’s would be hard pressed to carry much stuff! Better of with a decent wagon / estate car / break........

Take something like the Nissan Juke (ignore the awful looks for a minute) - it's bloody tiny inside. The Ford Kuga is just an obese Focus hatchback, the Qashqai is no better (and seems to be selling in huge numbers). I just don't get it. If you don't need lots of space - buy a hatchback, if you need extra space - buy an estate. SUV's don't need to exist - it's a class that sells in huge numbers for no valid reason. |

Couldn't agree more, what's more to the point is the amount of space they occupy on the road; the visual obstruction when following a SUV particularly at road junctions is a real problem unless you're driving a bigger one! As for car parks don't get me started!

As you say, it’s almost a case of having to adhere to the saying- “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”!
Had the opportunity to ride in a brand new V90 the other day, which is huge inside, but didn’t block the view of everyone behind. All the space most would ever need..... |

Mock not, they make some seriously nice cars nowadays- under the guidance of their Chinese parent company!

Aren't all vehicles in this thread - by classification of being an SUV - already 'sport'?
I guess we should refer to it as the Land Rover Discovery Sport Sport Utility Vehicle? Although is it worse than the Ford Festival Festival? Or the even more ridiculously named Toyota Midship Roadster 2-Seater Roadster? |

I'm still questioning how any of these vehicles have any UTILITY to them? Don't think many people, in the US at least, are loading up anything heavier than groceries in the $75k BMW SUVs. Although BMW is at least aware of this and calls them SportsActivityVehicles in the literature. But GM? Not a bit of sport or utility, especially since the Suburban went to full-time third row seating over the old removable and fold second row for an 8' bed. Quite comfortable for 6'7 ogre to sleep in line at Road Atlanta.

That would have been a great rival to the Vitara and Feroza.

the philosophy behind it ('lifestyle vehicle for active people') makes me think of what they were going for with the Aztec...including a built in cooler and camping table.
poorly executed in production but i like the notion of actually having a car that can offer more then just help with the daily commute and buy groceries on the way home with. along those lines, another Pontiac concept gem...the firebird hauler! |

But how sporty is in on the road??
Supposedly the actual production version of that was the Aztek. Sounds like a LOT of committee bs went in to that change to become one of the vehicles often recognized as one of the 10 worst ever. |
