so the other thing to be learned from this story is that if you want to prevent a 70's japanese car from rusting away then submerge it in sea water for a few weeks

Zpoint, thank's for the pictures, I never saw them before.
On the picture you can see my former mechanic Ernst Antonides who race'd very successful my Datsun Cherry 1000.The other man who bend over to me is also a mechanic who race'd the proto type Datsun Cherry ( with F3 Ford Engine).Unfortunately he died shortly after this picture, nothing to do with his race activity |

phhok, When was it when Datsun Nederland said “we are going to races”, which time path did they choose?
The 988 turned into #20 the first 240Z racecar at Zandvoort? But that must be at least late ‘71 That number or any Datsun didn’t come forward in Frank’s website during the 1971. Where did it go wrong with the 240Z, because only at the first race in ’73 there were two 240Z on the start grid. That was the time of Rdio Noordzee. I was a little spectator probebly during 68-71 seen all the familiar names comes by. Still have a scarp book of those days. Ab Goedemans always on three wheels, Slotemaker with his Mustang always as latest in the warm up. So he was able to show his drifts...... |

In 1971 and 1972, the Datsun(s) could only be entered as sportscar/prototype, since the touring car field only accepted GT's from 1973 on. And my website focusses on touringcars.
You'll find some references to the Datsuns in the text of the touring car meetings, though. |

long story..
Zpoint, It is such a long time ago and only can tell you from what I remember.
After the london-Sydney marathon with Rob Slotemaker, the first rally I did with Datsun was the Tulip Rally with a Fairlady 2000GT, of the three cars entered I was the only surviver and finish't fifth. I wanted to take part in the London - Mexico Rally. When I was in Tokyo I asked for the three 160 SSS works cars left in europe, you will know that the Japanese dont like to see no, but I drove them completely mad by constantly asking them to participate in that big rally. On the last day of my stay they give in, but on the condition that it should be a strict private entry because they tought the chance of finishing was minimal. When I came bach in holland I needed sponsors an found Radio Noorzee willing to give me once a week one hour radio time to get the money. At the finish the drivers and organisation gave us, after 3 broken pistons and so much other problems to fill a book, a special price for the most determinated crew. I did the TAP in the other 1600SSS, again a holed piston for nearly 40km and pushing the DAF of the Luybrechts for 10 km over the finish line. When I was in Tokyo again to discus the many problems with the STD 240Z's for the European market, they offered me, without asking for it, the ex-works 240Z's left after the Monte. At that moment Radio Noorzee stepped in and datsun Netherlands started a Datsun Dealer Team. I used the 988 to do the Acropolis and TAP rally where I ended up side down Later I made a group 4 race car of it, because I was very busy with building a race Datsun Cherry and a group 4 from the 986 for hans Ernst my car was only ready at the end of the saison the only race in 1971 was with one of the cars in complete rally trim for fun at Zandvoort. The 985, now in the hands of Z-specs, I used in the RAC and the only RHD car from with I tought it was the 987 I used in some rally cross In 1972 both cars where used in zandvoort, germany, Zolder and Estoril. Without any support from the factory, I made nearly all the special parts myself very little financial support from Datsun Netherlands the results where reasonable. First in a ADAC race, second at zandvoort, first and second at Zolder and a fasted lap time in front of Han Akersloot with a works Capri, Toine hezemans with BMW and Nico Chiotakis with Auto Delta Alfa Rob Janssen |

240Z Miroux brothers
The Miroux brothers bough the 240Z in Holland, this car was to return fron GB (RAC rally)to Japan. the brothers Henri an Michel drove the car in rally and track race in Belgium and the mecanieks change the car for the different specification(rally and track), the car had originaly Nikki carburetors and wie change to big Weber carburetor whit home made admition pipes. the oil cooler was inside the petrol tank, and the sterring wheel was right side, the body use different polyester parts. this was a nice car

Gerard,
Original carburettors would have been three Mikuni-Solex 44PHHs, not NIKKIs. Good to hear from somebody who had hands-on contact with '697' in period. Can you tell us what happened to the car in the end? An original Japanese 'Carnet' temporary-export license plate is a nice trophy! Cheers, Alan T. London, UK. |
