MANY thanks guys (and gals) for your wise words re. getting a scanner - much appreciated.

I am now tracking a few on eBay and will, hopefully, have one in time for the GP Masters next weekend.

The Silverstone frequency list would be great please Jim - you can PM me with it if you like.

I cant help with the technical aspects of what to buy but have welcomed those that have had them on post. All those I have had experience of use them sensibly and cerainly allowed those on post to be kept in the picture about whats happening. Very useful when I have been remote from or where there have been no radios or telephones. My only concern about the growth of scanners is - "are the clubs and circuit owners begining to rely on marshals providing their own equipment rather than provide adequate facilities on each post or flag point?"

Can't agree with that one - it's not like they used to provide them and now don't. Some marshals find them beneficial and wish to use them, and that's fine, but they're not essential either.

Don't act upon what you hear (unless it's 'release the cars'!) It really does help to know whats going on around the track, plus you'll find that so many circuits no longer mind them that you will get a thankyou at the end of the day over them!
OK, my view: -
I have no problem with scanners., but...
They are not Essential, but Can be very useful
Do not act on ANYTHING you here from them, even/ESPECIALLY(!) 'release the cars'.
They are for information only, not to receive instructions.
Let your chief/IO know you want to use one - if he says no, then don't

So, remember, if you are using a scanner, listen but don't act.

(If you do, then you're probably out!!)

Blimey, I'm agreeing with Simon and endorse what he says. Whatever next??

I would just add though to inform the Observer as well if you're on the bank, as (s)he is the post chief, not the IO.

So youy saying, your track side and you hear 'Release the cars' You'd stay there??
I'm not saying to wait to hear it, but surely anyone would clear the track?
Oh, and at Combe today they even asked how many people on each post had them and asked for any info to be passed onto Observes that didn't have them, and it worked REALLY well

I refer to my previous message and if what was asked of CombeMarshal is this the short end of the wedge I mentioned? Like boots, gloves and overalls will the future be supplying our own means of communication. I certainly dont have any objection to the use of scanners but do not feel we should buy one to make up for the shortfall in circuit communications.
I have been on several flag posts away from observer and incident crew with no method of communication about Saftey Cars or release or track information other than whistles or hand signals from someone with a scanner?

Does anybody think it is worth setting up a sticky thread to collect scanner frequencies for different circuits?

Nighthawk has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Was in at Maplins today noticed that the AR-108 is now £39.99 now thats a price thats acceptable.
Wish i had waited before buying mine a few months ago........

Scanner earpiece recommendations?

Hi All,

I fancy getting a scanner for next year. General concensus on here seems to go for the Maycom AR 108.

Looking on websites to order one (www.nevadaradio.co.uk seeming to be the cheapest), I can't figure out if they have an earpiece included?

Could someone tell me if they do? Also, if so, is it a decent over-ear thing, or one of those buds that will fall out as soon as you start moving? Finally, if I do need to get one, what jack size is it, and what make would people recommend?

Thanks,

Chris.

Didn't get an earpiece with mine.

I have rather crudely adapted stereo "Walkman" style earplugs to just one plug!
Worked fine for about 5 yrs to date!

I'll second the ear piece, though I got mine from maplins.
But that scanner is just a tad on the large side, does it come with wheels!!!

I'll second both comments! my first one used 6 batts, fine when stood still, but try running with that on your belt, it either puts your hip out or wrecks your spine, I now have a uniden ubc72, got it from nevada radio, comes with 2batts and charger but no earpiece, maplins had another sale there.
