In hindsight though it was ground breaking stuff. Way ahead of anything being done anywhere else in the world at that time. |

CBS debuted their Raceview in-car camera at the 1979 Daytona 500 in February. No doubting Seven's Racecam was the superior system -CBS adopted it in 1981 but CBS did transmit live TV pictures from a race car several months ahead of Seven. |

IIRC 7 was very proud of the fact that their camera was able to rotate, the CBS camera was fixed and only the 7 Racecam enabled the commentators to talk to the driver and vice versa, that blew the Americans away.

didn't they get some guys from channel 7 to go to nascar and install the incar camera's?
Nascar also had the tyre cam done before V8's too. |

Oh yeah, 'Racecam' was absolutely fantastic. I remember watching it on BBC Grandstand and thinking how such pictures made the race seem massively important. I know it is, but it just gave it a huge image outside of Australia i'm sure?
The BTCC cottoned on a few years later of course. |

As I recall the CBS Daytona set up used a fixed camera transmitting to a fixed receiver which was able to be used because the whole circuit at Daytona was line of sight between the car and the antenna.
The real magic of the 7 set up was the use of the helicopter as an uplink to allow continuous coverage round the circuit. The chopper pilots by the way are the unsung heroes of Bathurst coverage to this day. |

NBC beat everyone to open-wheel onboard camera's in 1983 though. Nascar did not have 'tyre cam' before Channel 7 did, they introduced that in the 80s |

The use of 'Wheel of Fortune's' Jon Deeks, and with Mr Raymond & Mr Crompton's voices accompanying several acres of #7 footage, I would imagine it to be a #7 love job...
A shame it didnt work.. would have been interesting to see Mr Crosby back for a second year... |
