Hmm - the viewing public at Goodwood can't see much of the old, overweight drivers when they're on track. The sight of me in period pink lycra wheezing up a climb might not prove too appealing.

In other news... I achieved my target of 5000 miles in 2020 this morning (admittedly on a virtual ride in the Pyrennees). Will probably do a proper ride tomorrow before the Christmas rituals begin.

I attended a mass start race around the Goodwood circuit, probably in the late '50's.*

* Note 'attended'

Better get the head shaved, and the pink shorts pressed, Alan.

Well. Mon Ami, that depends on your gearing of course. should you be on the 'windmill' pushing a 53x13, you might have a slower pedalling rate, but be proceeding at a quite prodigious speed. However, maybe the proverb applies to UK/EU negotiators?

The BBC used to show cyclocross on Grandstand many years ago. Was it devised for television as Rallycross was?

Did you ever appear in the televised events, Bob?

We used to have an event at school sports days called the "Slow Bicycle Race", Gerard. I was rubbish at it .....

In my case it's more "Et plus qu'il pédalait moins vite et plus qu'il tombe sur la terre"

Eurosport shows cyclocross sometimes. Several current top professionals started in CX. Out of interest, what size tyres did you run in those days Bob? They seem to use a minimum of 30c now.

Back in 'my day' bikes were normal road models with low gearing, chain guards, made by grinding the teeth off a large ring, which was bolted on to the crank set and special Cyclo Cross tyres, nothing specialised as today.
When we held the World CC Championships in 1973 I was Treasurer of the British Cyclo Cross Association, and the Secretary and I went to Holland to get a few tips from their Association that had held it in '72. The Daily Telegraph sponsored the event, and they were held at Crystal Palace.I was in charge of ticket sales, and on the day the cars queuing to get in caused so much chaos that the Police ordered us to stop checking or selling tickets.

Great times.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51ateuze4Nc News report.

Just remembered Barum tubs were the favourites.

If you would like a poster from the Championships I have plenty.

Bob.

Yes please Bob - I'd love a poster. As someone who struggles to bunny hop I am in awe of the range of skills of a CX rider.

Once turned up at Crystal Palace to be greeted by a Park Keeper who said this was where the Criss Cross Racing was on.

That's exactly as mine was - I rode in two consecutive 'Smirnoff' ones at Harlow in the very early eighties - they were huge events and has lots of international participants.

I made up the numbers mainly as I rode at that time for Harlow CC mostly on their 45 degree track - then I went on to Anglia Sport

We are very much encouraged here to bring back used coffee capsules like Nespresso for instance. They are said to be used to make new bicycle frames after "recycling".
Maths for today: knowing a capsule is circa 1 gr of aluminium, how many litres of coffee should I drink to have a new bike? Will a frame made with decaffeinate capsules be less nervous? Or the will the best results be achieved with a mix of deca and ristretto? Results anyone… EB?

Do they do Carbon coffee pods yet? You'll certainly need them soon if you're expecting to keep up with Alan and Delta LOL

Lovely day out today, was thinking of a bike ride but sanity prevailed. Spot of work it is then :-)

No carbon yet, sorry. But knowing how many toilet rolls have been recently sold, I guess someone will come with a nice idea…*Faire des vélos de merde, peut-être? Allez savoir, mon cher Max, les Français sont inventifs dans le "besoin"!

With winds reaching at least 140 kph here, cyclists are half happy, depending on which direction they ride… This barely affects my Ebicycle!

Happy New Year everyone!

The final setup made it home just before New Year.

Corima wheels and a 56 chainring with a new 8-speed cassette for racing use.
