Maybe your bulletproof Audi's would have succumbed to the same problems in this exceptional heat.

Eurosport suggesting an LMP2 has never led the race overall before. Did that ever happen with an LMP675 (such as MG or Zytek) at any point? Or were they just fairly high up the order until they broke?

I don't think they ever led. They were during the Audi years. They spent more time broken and finishing behind GT cars!

Biggest winner at LM so far IMO? Bill Gibson and Gibson Technology. Their engines will probably take two out of three podium spots, and I don't believe they've had a mechanical issue for one of their engines this weekend.
Gibson saw what was coming, pulled out of being the LMP2 chassis competition, and won the engine tender. |

Audi won in '00 and '05 in worse heat, '06 in similar heat, and they have tested in Bahrain and especially Sebring in part because of heat.
Not to mention that the LMP2s of all things have shown Audi-like reliability. Audi have never had a terminal engine issue at LM when they were around, and the Gibson V8s have been bullet proof mechanically this weekend. LMP2 have had far more human failings than technical issues. |

It wasn't just being reliable, it was being able to turn a car around quickly. Porsche have largely gotten on top of that, but Toyota still haven't.

Let's remember that Audi were also facing issues in the more recent Le Mans races... the current LMP1 cars are very complex and assuming mid-2000s reliability is just not realistic

I wonder if Jarvis thought he'd be fighting for a win at Le Mans again.

Anyone who says that Audi couldn't face exceptional heat wasn't there in 2000 or 2005.
2005 was dangerous to be outside. People were collapsing on the spectator terraces. And nevermind engines overheating, I literally puked with sun stroke in 2000. |

LMP drivers score points together so the 8 Toyota finishing 9th is bad for them. That's a lot of points given away.

I remember not understanding the modern LeMans until I saw Truth in 24 and my eyes popped out with that scene of Joest rebuilding Dindo's (?) R10 at Monza.

2014: several blown turbochargers
2015: broken front axle/e-motor, bodywork failures 2016: new car, too many problems, not reliable and slow Audi in the last three years. |

How many DNFs? Because this race has not been defined by reliability that puts you in the garage, it's been defined by fixing issues and if the problems are terminal. And didn't they win in 2014?

Well, the turbochargers were changed during the race and Audi still won. For an Audi, that kind of issue was like changing brake rotors for other teams. Then they had to change to batteries and went downhill.
