Rare video of the one time the Toyota GT-One raced outside Le Mans.
It's also very interesting in that it features the old GT1 (a lone Mclaren F1 GTR which was actually pushed into the GTP category with the Toyota) the new GT1 (then GTS) and JGTC/SuperGT GT500 cars all on the same race.
Great footage. Always been looking for video of those Japanese races.

Anyone know of any race coverage of the Suzuka 1000km when it was a FIA GT race in 97/98 (?)?

looking at the first part of that clip, I hadn't realised just how much the National/Wellington Straight, Brooklands and Luffied complex had changed!

The McLaren F1 GTR was entered in the LMGTP class it wasn't pushed into it.

"The following year, the GT1 class was abandoned and the McLarens no longer eligible. However, in an ACO sanctioned event in Japan in 1999, a McLaren F1 GTR was entered by Hitotsuyama Racing in the new LMGTP class for closed-cockpit prototypes. If the McLaren had won its class, it would have earned an automatic entry to Le Mans as a prototype in 2000. Unfortuntally the car failed to finish."

Le Mans in 2000 as a prototype...madness.

Same goes for French GT, now that they've dropped GT1 and others it's just another boring BoP circus for GT3s, with very little originality

What I meant was that despite how extreme the longtail Mclaren was, it was still production based and had little choice but to run in a prototype class (then again, that was pretty much the case, the previous year in GT1).

Toyota had an automatic entry for 2000, I would love to see how the GT-ONE would've done against the R8, I imagine not much better than the BMW did, but still.
