Speaking of Great Wheel-To-Wheel...
How about France 1979? Arnoux and Villeneuve must've swapped places 4 times in the last race, with GV's tires going away and Arnoux losing power... That was hard-nosed-but-fair. Of course, I liked it so much partly because of the result...

That race was incredible, first time I saw that footage I was just stunned. Suddenly, in the course of 2 minutes viewing, I understood the Gilles Villeneuve hype. But maybe Arnoux wasn't half bad either on that form.

That bit of work shows what makes racing so great! ...and what Ferrari are up to today shows just what makes today's F1 such a joke.

It hasn't gone anywhere. Races such as that have always been far and few between. Take a look back through the championships (driver and constructors) as I did a study on once before (I forget which board I posted it on...'quite a while ago). Championships are seldom close. Teams and drivers have usually been dominant for season(s) and the vast majority of the time teammates have not raced each other into the ground. Yes we remember distinctly the exciting times; as we should because they were...but they have always been well spread.... VIVA LA F1 !!!!

High hopes that the tyres now seem to be quite a bit more progressive - it's taken several years to get to this point. The other problem, ie the need to get on the same lap as the next team, only sorts itself out every few years - as has been pointed out we easily remember the years when things have been close, but easily forget the great many other years that were similar to this one.
