Channel 10 - Commercial coverage
We have all complained about the channel 10 coverage once in a while, there are many things which i think can be improved, on of the things i noticed was gone, was the thing which was played actually during the race, showing things like Skaife's diet, and im glad its gone.
Matthew White is still there, but i am starting to not dislike him as much as before. I enjoyed the commentators today, but i was absolutely sick of the commercials. In fact, since i have seen many of you people also extremely sick of the amount of ads as well, from 9:49, i started a log of the ads and the race. I recorded the two things of Race shown, and Ads. When it started, and how long it lasted for. Also, the amount of laps shown, or the amount of ads shown, plus a description if it was in the race, just to job your memory. It really does show how many adds there really were, you usually only got about 4 laps running, if lucky, before ad breaks....which were around 8 in a row. I cant attach word documents, so ill just put it straight here - hope it works. TIME LENGTH TYPE LAPS/ADS DESCRIPTION 9:49 28:56 Pre-/Race < 0 – 6 Countdown | Interviews | Respects | Start 10:18 3:40 Ads 8 10:22 8:40 Race 8 – 11 Morris out | Richards pits 10:31 3:40 Ads 8 10:34 17:50 Race 13 – 16 S.C. | Green | Blocked track | Skaife pit 10:52 3:29 Ads 7 10:56 8:15 Race 19 – 21 Green | 11:04 3:25 Ads 8 11:07 7:40 Race 24 – 27 Race Update 11:15 3:40 Ads 9 11:19 11:12 Race 29 – 34 Ozemail pits | Ellery pits 11:30 3:36 Ads 6 11:34 11:30 Race 36 – 41 Murphy pits | Lowndes pits 11:46 3:56 Ads 8 11:50 9:20 Race 43 – 45 Ingall pits | S.C. | 3 car battle 11:59 3:55 Ads 7 12:03 16:58 Race 46 – 52 Raace Update| Green | Battling 12:20 3:47 Ads 10 12:24 9:32 Race 54 – 58 Continued battle 12:34 4:05 Ads 7 12:38 15:27 Race 60 – 66 LP spin | Macrow crashes | S.C. | Pits. 12:54 3:32 Ads 10 12:57 9:10 Race 67 – 71 LP pits | S.C. | Green | Dynamik spins. 13:06 3:32 Ads 10 13:10 9:32 Race 73 – 76 Race update | GS pits| HYL off| S.C |Pits 13:20 3:44 Ads 9 13:24 20:24 Race 77 – 84 Ozemail pits | Green 13:44 3:44 Ads 8 13:48 8:16 Race 86 – 89 Close racing 13:56 3:40 Ads 7 14:00 7:09 Race 92 – 95 Skaife passes 14:07 3:40 Ads 8 14:11 8:24 Race 98 – 100 Race Update | Ellery pits | Pits 14:19 4:19 Ads 11 14:24 5:31 Race 103 – 105 Murphy pits 14:29 3:48 Ads 10 14:33 9:19 Race 106 – 111 Lowndes pits 14:43 4:00 Ads 8 14:47 8:36 Race 113 – 116 14:55 3:23 Ads 6 14:59 13:15 Race 119 – 125 Race Update | Ambrose pits | Esses spin 15:12 3:46 Ads 11 15:16 11:07 Race 126 – 131 Besnard out | Ellery pit 15:27 3:41 Ads 9 15:31 8:30 Race 134 – 137 CAT / Murph / Skaife pits 15:39 4:25 Ads 6 15:44 10:20 Race 139 – 143 Skaife door | Ambrose pits 15:54 4:00 Ads 8 15:58 9:24 Race 145 – 149 Race Update | Canto out 16:08 4:00 Ads 8 16:12 4:44 Race 151 – 153 JB off | S.C 16:17 4:06 Ads 7 16:21 26:50 Race 153 – END Skaife pits | End + Interviews 16:48 3:40 Ads 7 16:51 9:00 Post - Race Podium | END. thats funny, while you were watching out for ads and writing down the specifics, I was watching what I could of the race, I figured everyone else was too..?
You should have kept track of how much time you wasted doing that, when you could have been using the ads to their full effect by getting drinks, going to the toilet and whinging about Larry Perkins. Each to their own I guess. |

I tell you what, i wasted a huge amount of time on that, but i still managed to do a run to the water machine, and to the toilet in the breaks.
I need to calculate some of that into a readers digest version first, to make you all go WOW!.....or........... "That's too many" |

You have an email RaceTime.
Here is some stuff: Largest race bit: 28:56 (Start) Smallest race bit: 4:44 (2 laps) Largest Ad break: 4:19 (11 ads)(MIX106.5 territory) Smallest Ad break: 3:23 (6ads) I think the average race bit would be less than 10 minutes each, not counting the larger 20 minute or so bits. And the average ad break would be about 3:53. |

I have been taping the Bathurst races and cutting the adds out since 1998. Therefore by looking at the timed counter I noticed for at least the first 3 hours that Channel 10 were showing around 15 minutes of adds per hour.

Well Buckshot, i see channel ten have just got worse, have a look at this, gather round.
From that info above, from 9:49 in the morning, until 17:00 there are 431 minutes. From adding up the commercial times, we get 103 minutes! So, 24% of the race was actually ads. So i spose it's about the same. But still, i would like to have a channel nine cricket - like style commercial break, with one add, every once in a while, you just get so sick of the ads all over again. 221 ads for christ sake! |

But cricket with it's overs lends itself to those sort of commercial breaks. The problem with motorsport is it features constant activity from go to whoa with a chance something interesting could happen at any second.
But 15 minutes per hour is a bit rich ! |

But would you prefer missing 2 laps of racing in a row, and seeing 4 laps?
OR Seeing 5 laps of racing, with a 30 second interval a few times? In terms of racing, and especially enduros, having an ad, then coming back to have a look at what is happening quickly is better than what we have at the moment. |

I found the commercial count to be rather high, but I guess this is where the money comes from to be able to have a ten hour telecast to some extent.
Not that I am sticking up for ten or anything, but a few adds were being shown during safety car periods which is not so bad, as they are pretty boring to watch anyway. I don't know about anyone else, but I find the hourly race updates very annoying. If you are watching the race you have already seen it happen once. I just think it's more time that could be spent watching the actual racing. At least they didn't play all those flash backs and stupid segments during the race this year. |

No commercials = No V8's.
Interesting that some replies to this didn't even notice the excessive amount of commercial airtime. These must be the same people who sing ad jingles to themselves as if they were real music. Homer Simpson eat ya heart out. Isn't their an industry guideline for max amount of ads to content? I thought it was no more than 14 minutes in the hour? Last edited by Chucky; 12 Oct 2003 at 21:49. |

I think if they must show ads they should cut the racing to say a quarter of the screen (top left?) and show the ad with the rest of the screen, sounds and jingles and **** included. If they have to have ads, I wish I could still see if someone was making the pass of the season in the background.

It is a sign of success that so many ads are running during the race, if Tonys dreams come true we will see the opening lap and the last lap with one big ad break in between!

I had the top 10 on Sat and the race taped for me so I could watch it, with no ads, no race updates or promo's (unless ontrack action was also being shown) basically just the cars on track and the total time recorded was ..........5 hrs 37 mins, the actual race went for 6hr 33 min approx that means we didnt see 1 hr of the race plus dont forget the top 10 was in that 5 hrs 37 min that was recorded for me so we probably missed close to 90 mins of the race.

My tally of laps before ad breaks was 5, in some places 7. Why dont they have ads a the bottom of screen.

The thing that bugs me most is that here in Perth we always have a delayed telecast, so it would be possible to pause the tape when they go to ad breaks. But it will never happen because that would be smart...
