If it works, it's works! - EJ's Ford Contract, discuss

WOW, with EJ nothing is that simple and it seems that Parry-Jones has decided that he's going racing and that Lauda isnt going to stop him. As for Jaguar "never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee."

This must be the first time that a works contract has been talked down! It seems pretty clear that Ford have decided that F1 should pay its way, this has not been happening with Jaguar. As a starter they have flogged 10,000 trucks to DHL (for 200m?)who used to run GM/Mercedes on the back of this deal, in exchange for say 50 specialist 3.5 V10's. Good busines, global branding of vehicles that people actually drive.

Ford cannot say its a works deal, its a partnership because of Jaguar, but EJ isnt putting his hand in his pocket. This deal can and will be explained in several ways though we are still waiting for the Ford take on it , does anybody think that the "Ford RS1 Cosworth" engine will be even 1 horsepower down on the Jag unit, this branding is going to be used to push hot hatches to boy racers.

If you dont pay for the units its a works deal right?

Maybe the Ford RS1 Cosworth engine will be more than 1 horsepower more than the Jag unit. Or maybe Jordan will know how to use it better!

we all know by now that EJ can get blood out of a stone , and also he has a knack of turning the truth into a sentence that is more pleasing to his ears !. Im really interested to hear what Ford have to say , and whether they call it a works deal ?

Thats an interesting point.

Remember when Jordan first had the works Honda and BAR were moaning at Honda because Jordan was getting an extra 4BHP or so over what BAR were getting. It turned out the engines themselves were identical but Jordans exhaust system was more effective than BAR's and there was an increase in power output becuase of it.

It's no use having a good resource if its craply implemented.

Right but the engine isent everything - Im still unsure about Gary Anderson and what he can really do. This year's car is not bad but it should have been a lot better - lets see what he can come up with in 03 - cos the engine should definately do the job better than the Honda.

The only thing that worries me about next year is the fact that if Anderson is only this week going to talk to Ford about engine specification, then IMO it's quite late in the design process of next years car. Ideally the design process would START with the engine and the car would grow around that.

And as for Gary Anderson, as I've said in the past, he did the business on both the 198 and the 199 so I think he's up to it. Jordan and Anderson just need stability which is one thing that they have not had since 1999. I wouldn't expect too much from next years car. Improvement towards the end of the year probably, and then start moving foreward the year after.

Anderson is NOT the chief designer for Jordan, Henry Durand is. There is plenty to design without the engine. nailing down the design philosphy can take a while before you even start to decide what goes where or weight distribution or suspension layout or cockpit size or.... etc etc. what you do need the engine for however is gearbox design, Jordan have had difficulty with these over rcent times

Nobody seems to know who the cheif designer is at Jordan, they seem to be going through a Jaguar-esque period this year
