Fuel/Mechanical Problems on the Last Lap
I was justing thinking that there have been a number of races lost by drivers in the lead or a significant position on the last lap due to fuel/mechanical problems. I think it's an interesting issue, because with all their calculations, fuel saving measures and ability to monitor fuel consumption, you wouldn't expect it to happen with so little room for error. It also seems wild that mechanical peices can last an entire race but fail so close to completing their task.
For instance while in the lead: Max Papis ran out of fuel on the last lap @ MI. I think it was in '98. Rahal ran out of fuel, I think it was @ Gateway around '98ish. Bludel and Gugulmin (sp?) BOTH ran out of fuel in '97 @ Detroit. Unser Jr.'s engine blew up @ RA in '96 or '97. While in a significant position: PT ran out of fuel on a hundred meters from the finish @ Montreal in 2003. Can you guys think of other examples? |

* Al Unser Jr's engine was the 1996 race. I don't know if you can call it mechanical... but De Ferran had his rain tyres on for one lap too long in Portland 1997. |

Papis ran out of fuel in 1999, giving the win to Kanaan by a mere 0.032 over Montoya.
Papis ended up P7, but still on the lead lap, as we was able to coast across the finish line and pull onto the grassy part of the frontstretch. I remember it well. The other ones that immediately came to mind, Snrub's already mentioned. |

These things tend to stick in the mind because they've happened so late in the race, but if you compare it with the number of cars out there and the number of races there are, it really is very rare.

Obviously running out of fuel is most likely at the end of race (and on the lap before each green-flag pitstop), so the large amount of fuel issues on the last lap is easy to explain.

Oriol ran out of fuel at Laguna 2000, while running in a strong 8th place (having passed cars). He was classified 16th. And while running 4th at Long Beach 2003, he again ran out of fuel. This one was with three laps to go.
