Several years ago AVESCO changed the name from the ATCC to the Shell Championship Series. Recently however they have realised that the history of the Championship is highly valued by the fans and they are overdoing their efforts to link the SCS with the history of the ATCC. So, the name may be retired but the championship itself is still going, though in a rather modified form.

Not quite right. CAMS own the name Australian Touring Car Championship and, when AVESCO took over the management rights to the category, it didn't include the use of the name ATCC.

As I understand it CAMS have still not allowed AVESCO, or anyone else for that matter, to use the name.

PEPSI should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
At last years V8 Supercar presentation night there was a lot of fuss made about it being the first time in many years that the championship winner was awarded the ATCC Trophy and that it would continue in the future

The title of 'Australian Touring Car Champion' only became important to AVESCO when PROCAR wanted to have it...

It seems that on the telecast all of a sudden this year they have made a bigger deal about mentioning any championships pre-97. Also, to my knowledge, the SCS winners in 99 and 2000 were still awarded the ATCC.

Also interesting that i heard that the GT Performance championship will be able to use the name 'Australian Manufacturers Championship'

Granted they have been acknowledged by CAMS in their manual (have they?? can someone check?) but they are not publicly called the Australian Touring Car Champion any more.

i heard that to be an Australian Championship all point scareing races could only be in this country. That is why i am trying to understand it. Last i heard CAMS didnot allow Procar to use the ATCC. Typical CAMS!

Nivola - then that begs the question, what about NZ rounds of the SCS? And was this a problem when the Tasman Series for open wheelers raced in both countries. And what about the DTM, didn't that race outside Germany?

DTM runs under different rules. AFAIK there is nothing in the Australian NCR's to preclude an overseas round being run for any Australian title.

I know the CAMS Manual precludes interstate rounds from State Championships, but this is something else again. I guess all we need is someone who can be bothered to look up their Manual.

Hehe - haven't bought one since 1997 and, as they keep 'losing' my officials licence application I have vowed not to bother applying again (seeing as the ACCC contends I, as a 'professional' have coverage under the Trade Practices Act) - they refuse to accept I am an official so no officials discount - so stuff 'em!
