Yellow Flags.
Well Terrance mentioned it ,so here goes. You have been driving flat out for half the race working hard to build a gap from the guy behind "either in a Capri or MGB" then you come across a yellow flag. So being a good chap and not wanting to upset our dear Cof C you back off. Drive past the incident"one of those Yankee cars in the barriers" get to the Marshalls post with the green flag and of corse whats happend that bloke in the car behind gets the jump on you because he has slowed down but not as much as you but gets a good run leading up to the green flag. He or she then goes on to win the race or class and nothing gets said or done. I know because thats what i did at Brands this year in Jims Westminster and i got the jump to the line on an A35. Which was great fun and both he and i had a good laugh about it in Park Ferme. So thats your answer John.

That happened to me at Brands years ago when I slowed for a yellow on the last lap when in the lead and was beaten to the line. Now I make sure the guy behind is sitting on my boot if its that close. All is fair in "love and war"

Iain, when the overtaking wasn't done BEFORE the green flag, nothing went wrong there. There is no rule either that says you are not allowed to pick up speed again (for those few drivers that ever slow down for an incident) right after the incident and before the green flag.
All a bit of grey area. I couldn't care less if drivers speed up after an incident and before the green flag. But the ones that overtake before the green are mine! |

We have an organiser overhere www.dnrt.nl (I race a Saker sprint with them) who use code purple . if there is a yellow flag or safety car situation they use all course purple flags untill the problem is solved. you cannot move closser to the guy in front of you and its controlled. Its a system which works very well , surely with endurance races.
So their is no cheating of racers which work their way to the front not the honnest sporty way. |

There's an interesting contradiction here, if you think about it. There's a perception that it's unfair to close up under yellow flags and thus gain advantage and yet, if the incident then requires a safety car, you're required to close up in single file.
It's also perceived that it's somehow unfair to 'get the drop' after a yellow flag/safety car period but, surely, if you're smart/skilled enough to be in the right gear/on the cam/on the right line, that's part of racing skill and tactics - it's certainly regarded as such in the US where safety cars/full course yellows have been used for many years. I don't know the answer other than to accept that 'you win some - you lose some' which I believe was Mario Andretti's attitude when he was on the receiving end. |

I think this comes down to British queueing etiquette!

Or the French system . When faced with a queue every french person has two objects - one is to jump the queue and the other is to stop anybody else doing so!

Always a good thing when the guy in front slows down a little too much!
Thought the ruling was that cars should procede at a slower speed [ie,not racing] but should be closer together,at least that way the Marshals only have one chunk of traffic to deal with, rather than the whole circuit being occupied by race cars coming at them in a constant stream. |

Nomad_n, for flaggies, it's no big deal - all the flags go out at the same time with a radio call. (of course that means a proper comms system - something a lot of British circuits still will not invest in) In practice we (the marshals) would call in a car if they overtook after the flag had been put out for more than a few seconds (ie it would be the 2nd or 3rd puple flag the driver came across). After that it's down to the timekeepers/race control. During the practice sessions time was set aside for laps behind a safety car doing 60kph so that all competitors could "calibrate" to that target time. In summary, it's another full course yellow variation, not a solution for the original poster's problem . |

>>>>>>>>Everybody has to lap at a 60kph average- and race control know what time a 60kph lap takes.
B*ggered if I do. Seems very complicated to me and an answer to a problem that doesn't really exist - racecraft is as important in winning a race as driving fast round corners. |
