We did this recently, but these are my choice.
Ayrton Senna’s Principles of Race Driving
Denis Jenkinson The Racing Driver
Paul Frere Competition Driving
Pierro Tarufi The Technique of Motor Racing.
Jackie Stewart Principles of Performance Driving
You also need something on sports psychology like Terry Orlick In Pursuit of Excellence
A sister to this 10/10ths board is a mag called Circuit Driver and the website has some stunning common sense stuff. The circuit guides are perfect.

Werewolf.. There is no book available that will stop you looking like "a prat" on your first race! Even seasoned racers still end up looking like prats on occassions!

Try these. Saloon Car Preparation - Nigel Macknight. Not single seaters but a good insight into the dynamics.

For engines I highly recommend Engine Management by Dave Walker of CCC magazine. Its available through Haynes Publishing. Its quite technical but its written in laymans terms.
