Good stuff. Historic racing, although really taking off post 1990, has been with us a lot longer, and I've been watching it since the late 1960's. A number of clubs, particularly the VSCC, of course, were running races for historic cars even earlier than that.

I think you are not quite correct. The Allcomers scratch race was one of the main races of the day along with the Seaman Vintage and Seaman Historic Trophy races and ran in the middle of the programme. Post war cars weren't admitted until 1963 and then only pre 1954 and for that one year they ran in the Historic Seaman. It wasn't until 1965 or 1966 that the 2 1/2 litre formula cars were accepted. The last race of the day was always a handicap and had the added spice of a few survivors from the Trophy races to liven the proceedings. In those days "historic" racing was the VSCC. Then JCB came along and changed everything. |

What about the Griffiths formula; that was bit earlier than the Bamford involvement wasn't it, or did they sponsor that?

John, you are absolutely correct. The Griffiths Formula (named after Guy Griffiths) was devised by the Frazer Nash Car Club in 1966. It was to preserve the sports racing cars of the 1950s which the VSCC ironically didn't want to bring under their wing. The mantle was taken on by the newly formed HSCC which in those days wasn't involved in race organisation but was formed to preserve and register the cars
I think races for the Griffiths Formula were fairly few and far between and it was the AMOC who perhaps did more than most to promote it. My father put up a trophy for Griffiths Formula cars in 1967 in memory of his late brother who loved the cars of that era. Happily the right car, an Aston DBR1 won the first running of the race before the Jaguars took a strangehold. JCB came along in 1970 and organised a championship for both racing and sports cars of the 1950s which we all thought was very odd at the time but proved to be very successful. |

I'd be very interested if anyone had Classic Saloon Car Club images from this period.

The CSCC as it was then, started in 1976. It was based around 50's saloon s so I doubt anyone considered them historic at that time.
