FF1600 Engine Power

Had a bit of email banter with Chris Walsh on FF1600 engines and what is the highest bhp you can have on a LEGAL FF1600 engine?

Walshy says that anything over 109 is NOT legal?

I remember Jason Minshaw saying to me his was either 116 or 117? And I think mine is 113? So who has the highest????

Come on Blue Nose let us know you have been very quiet lately

Most power i had out of a ford was 500bhp !!! sorry that was my Mustang.

Seriously it depends to a certain extent on the dyno and how load is put on .

we have 2 at 113 and 1 at 114.

kartingdad has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!

How do you know if your engine is legal or not?

The most in depth investigation I have seen is when the scrutes (thats SCRUTES in case you mis read that) measured the chokes on our carb.

You will NEVER know if you have a legal engine until it has been stripped and checked by the MSA.

Until then you are just going by your own and your builders interpretation of the rules.

I remember being told a story of a young lad back in the late 80's at Oulton blowing an engine on a test day. Daddy made a few phone calls and a brand new engine was collected from the Ford plant. It was strapped into the car and the lad had never been so quick. He did a whole season on that engine with podiums here and there. Now the engine was straight from the factory, off the same line as all of them. When it was stripped at the end of the season, it was just shy of 1700cc!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every one of them is different. This could just be bull and I couldn't tell you the name of the driver as I can't remember it, but all I know (and Golddustmini might be able to shed light on this) is that a dyno can put out whatever you want it to. It's just another service to spend your money on. I've just replied in another thread that one engine builder in the NW who DOES build a good engine summed it up by saying "Why do you need to Dyno it if it's put together right".

figures are figures, something to brandish about in the paddock, pub or internet BBS, there nothing more than that....

you dont need a dyno to give you a figure if the engines put together right, you dont ever need a figure at all.

Thanks for that mate. I know what you mean about running in etc. It's more controlled on a dyno, but regards output figures, it's more just a case of "mine's bigger than yours" isn't it?

at the end of the day there are gonna be engines that perform better than others, its just a lucky and unforceable mix of parts, some combine to make a better than usual whole, touting figures about is all a little pointless in my view, like penis envy. consider that the gearbox, tyres, bearings, all the seals etc will all be loosing you energy, what it does on the track is the important thing not what it says on a peice of paper about having one more inch in leng... *cough* erm i mean 1 extra BarHorsePower than the person next to you...

That's what Alan at Scholar said about my current 100 bhp motor. Funnily enough he was adamant that it is a good engine (and he never actually built it himself).

Like it's been said already, it depends on the overall package also. Most of the older cars have gained weight either in the bodywork or replacement parts not being lightened. The engine can be as good as ever, but the car is slower. All that resistance to the wheels makes a difference, even if the engine is the strongest out there. the only way to tell is to drive it. Let your lap times do the talking................

Found my dyno graph last night and it says 101.6 bhp, being over a 100 bhp for well over a 1000 revs, with max torque just over 4,000 rpm.

Scholar told me that is not a bad figure for his dyno but that the spread the power is there and the torque are are 'very good.' Bearing in mind he never actually rebuilt the motor itself he has no need to tell me anything other than his true opinion.

I'm putting my spare motor on there soon so it will be interesting to compare...

The most famous FF1600 was a Minster called Patch (it had a patch on the block), dont know how much bhp it had.

The world and his wife of works drivers had that one. No doubt blue nose will now be on a mission to find it and buy it.

I think it was given to Vincenzo Sospiri when it was retired.

Blus Nose will probably start running Jan Heylens' Festival winning engine!
