Best Julian Bailey Performance
Not many people remember Julian Bailey - basically because he was rubbish. He drove for Tyrrell in 1988 and Lotus for the first half of 1991. He finished 6th at the San Marino GP in 1991 and as such this must be his best performance!

It seems Wrex and I have encouraged this...
He drove for Tyrell and Lotus. Qualifying for seven races and gaining one point at the race mentioned above. From 26th on the grid! He has since had much success in Touring Car and Sportscar. |

I would have thought that winner of the Formula Ford Festival in 1982, 2nd in the Macau F3 race in 1989, 2nd at Sebring in 1991 and FIA GT drivers champion in 2000 are all pretty good performances. A simple "He was rubbish" is a bit harsh. Thank goodness there is a world outside Formula 1.....

His most memorable race ever was that BTCC support race when he punted his team-mate Will Hoy (R.I.P.) off from a 1-2, prompting Murray Walker to remark that "the car upside down is a Toyota". Pretty much the first non-F1 race I can rememebr watching on TV, although I probably saw snippets of the IndyCar program about Nigel Mansell's rookie season there.
But, whatever next, a poll asking about Deletraz's best performacne? At least Alesi, Barrichello, Montoya and Villeneuve have put in some good eprformances. |

Julian Bailey wasn't 'rubbish' and he wasn't 'mad'. A really good racer with a lovely partner. You do get some **** on this site.
There is definitely life outside F1. |

I remember Bailey, He used to spend more time shaking his fists at other competitors than where they were supposed to be on the steering wheel...

Anyone with a sense of humour can see I was posting a non-serious thread in reply to the recent development of these "Best Driver Performance" threads... BUT In any case, does having a "lovely partner" mean that he could not have been rubbish? - Or is a driver's ability to have a lovely partner somehow connected to driving an F1 car quickly??? Also, please note the thread is best performance in F1. Fair enough he may have had a reasonable pedigree outside F1, but this does not negate the fact that he was in F1 because he was a pay driver. Remember that he was totally blown out by Jonathan Palmer in 1988 at Tyrrell. |
