Which GT1 cars would challenge the R8?
Which of the GT1 cars of the last few years would seriously challenge the Audi R8 if they were still around. I reckon a reliable GT1 [Toyota] and a CLK would do the job , with the 911 gt1 98 and the McLaren just behind the Audis.

I don't think any of those cars listed, with the possible exception of the Toyota GT1, would be able to challenge the Audi. The R8 is on a completely different level compared to those cars. It's easily the best sportscar to be built since the demise of Group C.

aren't gt1 cars accepted as generally being generally faster than p cars, wasn't the pole speeds at Le Mans faster with them?(which is why bmw's 99 LM win was somewhat of an upset)? if i am correct in thinking that, then i'd say all of them, except for the flying mercedes. as for reliabilty, there the edge would go to the r8, but i still think the gt1 cars would win out in most circumstances

The GT1/GTP cars would only have a real advantage over an open top proto at high speed tracks, such as Le Mans. At any other track though, an open top proto, such as an Audi R8, will be signifigantly faster.
I've put a small comparison together to outline my point. 1998 Donington FIA GT Pole - 1:22.870 (Mercedes CLK-LM) 2001 Donington ELMS P Pole - 1:21.122 (Audi R8) Difference: 1.728s 1998 Laguna Seca FIA GT Pole - 1:16.154 (Mercedes CLK-LM) 2000 Laguna Seca ALMS P Pole - 1:15.028 (Audi R8) Difference: 1.126s 1997 Nurburgring FIA GT Pole - 1:31.488 (Mercedes CLK-GTR) 2000 Nurburgring ALMS P Pole - 1:27.938 (Audi R8) Difference: 3.550s 1998 Silverstone FIA GT Pole - 1:39.847 (Panoz GTR) 2000 Silverstone ALMS P Pole - 1:37.030 (Lola B2K/10) Difference: 2.817s As you can see, the Prototype's are quite a bit faster. I think it's wrong just to compare the lap times. You have also to consider the fuel consumption. And yep, with it's direct injection the Audi is the best car around at the moment. (nice message icons btw, uuuch)

I would have to say both the Toyota GT-ONE and the Mercedes CLK-LM would challenge the Audi R8.
