Most interesting engine to ever find it's way into an F1 car?
What do you reckon? What was the most interesting, exciting, or most beautiful sounding engine to ever find it's way into an F1 car?

The W12 engine Life created for 1990 had a fascinatingly original design concept, with the arrangement of the cylinders being so different from conventional engines, but it became clear pretty quickly why no one else had used the concept - the car was unbelivably slow and unreliable.

This may seem like treason to some people - but I tend not to find engines interesting

The BRM H 16 was also very interesting but like the Life W12 it was pretty unsuccessful.

I heard the Ferrari V12 in Belgium 1995 and it still raises the hair in my neck just thinking about it. It was the first F1 engine I heard for real actually.
Belgium 95... Friday morning, first free practice. It had just stopped pooring and I was at the busstop chicanes. I heard this beatiful sound to my left, at a distance, but it started to fade away. The announcer told us Jean Alesi was first on the track. About 2 minutes later The Sound (note the capitals) got louder again, louder and louder. The first thing I saw was a lot of treetops and the spray from Alesi's 412 T2 being thrown even higher than the treetops. Nothing beats the sound of a Ferrari V12 coming at you full throttle. Well, the same engine accelerating away from under your nose maybe. I wish I had a videocamera with me back then so I could show my kids one day (they haven't been conceived yet... I don't mind trying though). They will probably never hear that V12 at full speed, maybe see it at an exhibition... "Look dad, it's the car Micheal Schumacher won his 9th title in!" "Not now son, daddy wants to see the last of the V12's..." |

Honda's racing engines have always had a very peculiar sound and among those the V12 was extraordinary.

The 3.0 Matra V12 1969-1975
Dan Gurney's Eagle-Weslake V12 1967-1968 Interesting? how about BRM's H16 and Coventry Climax 1965 1.5 Flat 16. 1967-1980 Brm V12's especially the 48 valve engines. Successful? Ferrari's 3.0 Flat12 (1970-1980) Honda's 1.5 litre transverse mounted engine.1964-65 Last edited by Teretonga; 14 Jan 2005 at 23:52. |

Wasn't the Life W12 also the one with the rotary valve actuation?

bring back the days of variety of engines in F1....
It wasn't all that long ago when we had a grid split between such gems as v8's v10's, v12's etc. Much more musical. The Ferrari V12 was indeed a note to behold, I was lucky enough to hear it again last year at the EuroBoss opener at Silverstone, it simply drowned anyother engine note out. For me though, I prefer the sound of v8's |

Wasn't the BRM H16 essentially two V8s stacked like this:
\/ /\ Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the '66 season regulations had called for 1.5L engines and in '67 the regs called for 3.0L so they made an engine out of two 1.5Ls. I think there was some sort of wacky gear mechanism that coupled the power and was the bane of the engine's existance? Wasn't the reliability record extraordinarily poor? Teretonga: Could you explain what was particularly interesting about the engines you listed? |
