I heard a report that McNish might miss the race due to a bizaare injury - he apparently injured his BACK WHILST REMOVING HIS KILT!! It is said that he could only complete four laps in practice and had to bring the car back into the pits because he was in 'excruciating' pain...
Tell me this isn't true! If it is, who takes his place, and does he lose the championship if his co-driver takes a point ? |

I believe he only aggravated/sensed the pain when he removed the kilt; the injury actually occurred when he was lifting luggage he had packed.

Whatever... if it is true, and he loses the title as a result, it pretty much sums up the luck he's had through his career...

The way the BBC report was written, it happened after 1st practice. as we are now into 3rd practice time I think that Big Al will race. I'm sure that today's medics can fix him up for the race. Simon |

I've only briefly scanned this forum, but I get the impression that he only has to drive out of pitlane to be eligable for points. And if this is the case, then his co-driver can't beat him. I'm sure he'll manage to get the car out of pitlane won't he ? Even if he parks it at turn one... Fingers crossed!

I heard the taking off the kilt part was a joke, but he did hurt himself.
Looks like Brad Jones is on standby. |

you could just get a sports physio to pumpyou full of drugs like they do with the weight lifting boys when they pull or tear muscles.

Nishy injured himself lifting a suitcase? Why in Heaven's Name did God Give Us Bellboys?????
What with Patrick Carpentier falling downstairs with a suitcase, thus trashing his 2000 season - and now this - I think it's time there were strict rules governing the use of suitcases! I have also heard that all he has to do is start the race and he will get the championship. Knowing his extraordinary dediction, that should not be a problem for him. |

Al may well want to start the race, do a lap or two & retire but me thinks that Audi would want two cars to finish, hopefully 1 - 2. Therefore Audi will not want an injured driver or one drugged to releive the pain, (imagine the lawsuit !!!) We also have had enough of drugs with the Olympics so please don't start that subject up again. Hopefully Al will recover enough to please the Audi team bosses. SL |

from what I can gather he has to complete 25 laps to gain enough points to win the championship...I hope he does make the start but at the same time I hope Brad Jones manages a bit of a drive.
only hours to go !!!!!! |

Why does he need to complete 25 laps ? Don't they only score points if the car finishes ?
Whatever, I think it'd be very unfair of Audi to not let him drive if he declares himself fit after all he's done for them over the past few years. But, I guess, he's leaving them for a competitor, so they probably feel they owe him no favours... |

An hour and a half in and McNish is leading the race and in the middle of the second part of a double stint.

So did we establish why he only needed to do the 25 laps to win?

it was to do with the points system Carrie..have a look at the other post "ALMS points" and hope fully it may explain a few things..points for laps led and things like that and I also believe to be eligible for points each driver has to do a certain percentage of the race ..and that worked out to be 25 laps for Allan.
