Earnhardt Jr. crash
in warm up Dale had a crash that resulted in quite a fire.
http://www.americanlemans.com/News/A...spx?NewsID=252 Unfortunately he has suffered minor burns. It seems from what I've read (DSC and above) he is OK though. I hope this doesn't put him off. Quote:
I'm glad he is generally OK and it is a shame we won't get to see him race later. Last edited by Adam43; 18 Jul 2004 at 17:35. |

I've just seen this is mentioned in the big thread. I don't know if it warrents a thread of its own. I guess it is a talking point after the race and might get lost otherwise. Feel free to merge A, F and P.

what was really strange was the minor bump the car endured. and how limp Dale was in the car afterward...then the sudden burst of flames- quite spectacular, a good thing nothing terrible happened, could have been bad for Racing all over the planet, even worse in America.
Hope he is well. but why would the fuel (which you see spilling over the rear camera) catch like that? it is far from the exhaust and the fuel line was severed from the tank.... |

I've seen it now and it was a lot worse than I imagined. Although the footage was superb, so that didn't help. Several camera angles, including on board caught it.
Also he seems a little worse than I first though. The last I heard he was being kept in over night. He'll be alright, but it does sound nasty. Last edited by Adam43; 18 Jul 2004 at 21:05. |

All the best to him. After what happened to his father, the last thing we need is something happening to Dale jr.

Was that the same chassis that caught on fire last year at Laguna?

he's fine-
we hardly get this much press when schumi got hurt at silverstone, or when andretti flipped his son's car in indy practice laast year, or when kenny brack got the worst end of a tyre touch... media darlings-and NASCAR money |

Clearly fuel can be seen from the 'rear facing bumper cam'.
Surley this cannot right after what looked like a fairly light impact?, the marshals seemed in a bit of a dither as well, not easy when confronted with an exploding car I guess. |

Not saying they didn't do there job well, heck I would not be rushing towards a car thats exploded, but he did crash right infront of a marshal post and from the clip posted elsewhere it can be seen it took awhile to get the extingishers working. Maybe the camera angles are deciving. |

Looks pretty fierce on the footage... if Dale Jr was in a Corvette works race-suit, it was one of the quality ones that Stand21 manufacture for them (and the majority of the endurance teams in Europe and the US). I bet he's glad of it this morning! Sorry for the plug, but I use their kit and it's undoubtedly awesome!

Do you think two 10 pound extinguishers would have done any good at all on that ragin fireball? I saw one corner worker using it to keep the flames away from the station and clearing a path to the car. He went to Junior as soon as it was safe for him.

Made the evening news here in NZ.... would be nice to see ALMS in the evening news without a fire involving a well known NASCAR driver. Thankfully the injuries weren't as serious as they could have been.
As Nordic mentions... it seemed to be not such a heavy impact, so that fuel splashing about, didn't look too good to me either. |
