Any reason why Stirling Moss, Dan Gurney, Jackie Ickx and J Rindt were left off ?? Could add a few more greats as well.

Welcome to the forum ram . I think you'll find this topic has been done to death though, and as stated in another thread, most agree its not possible (or apropriate) to give that title to anyone. |

You can't judge the "greatest driver ever". The sport has simply evolved too much. You cannot compare Fangio against Schumacher, or even Senna against Schumacher. Each of the drivers listed were greats in their own time - and (I repeat) that's all that matters.

I think we should ask everyone who has or is his/her favourite driver. That would be more accurate and without discussions.

Ok, because you cannot compare eras and stuff, we'll just give our own opinion of who's best without having to start a massive argument about why such-and-such is better.
My personal opinion on who the greatest ever is Jim Clark. |

My vote has to go to the great Fangio, he was simply the greatest driver, but I judge statisticly, there are a lot of different areas you could say the greatest driver. It's ver tough to decide

I think I have to concede that TGF is the best ever, though my heart is with Gilles. Part of being the best in any sport is staying at the top for a long time, and sadly, Gilles and Aryton were taken from us much too early..

I will repeat the party line. There is plenty of room fopr debate, but its impossible to judge drivers across time and in cars with different characteristics. We will just never know. As highly as I regard Jim Clark, and he would be my sentimental favorite, I never saw him race, at least as I remember.

I concur Legend, and the story surrounding Clark and his untimely death is that it was likely he was going to retire at the end of 1968. I believe that makes the story even sadder, kind of like those stories about drivers being taken in their final races and things like that. It's just unfair.
