The first run of the new engine and it's the same old incompetence from Mercedes!
Being fair, I suppose niggles are what the shakedown is for - PdlR says it was a minor problem of burning bodywork. But I'm sure we can rely on Glen to keep us up to date with any further McLaren problems |

If it weren't for the fact that they have had plently of burning bodywork issues before (MP4-18 especially) I would be even more sceptical - I guess the benefit of the doubt can be extended this time. As you say - that's what shake-downs are for. On the other hand (man - I just don't know when to let it lie!) surely the current car shouldn't spontanteously combust - this is an MP4-20 with the smaller V8 in it. |

Will McLaren be the first grand prix team to start running their cars with two engines?

Perhaps it was the old exhaust failure problem - caused by a rod being thrown through the block and straight through the pipes!

I've high hopes that there will be quite a big variation in power and performance with the new cars, at least for a period of time until the various tricks are learned. Other factors (such as driving style, as mentioned by PDLR) will come into play and we may well get quite a few surprises.

Sounds similar to the problem Stewart had in Australia 1999. It's early days though, they've got 7 months to overcome teething troubles, and they're at a reasonably advanced stage consdiering that they probably haven't stopped devleopment on the 2005 engine.

Please stop being so negative. As appears from the photograph (thanks Glen), the car made it out of the garage.

Maybe they've just got Keke Rosberg to do some consultancy work and he was having his after-drive "oily-rag".

I'd like to see some of that. Been a few months without any proper testing at Montmeló.
(BAR are there now but I wonder if it's open - no pictures anywhere) |

Ah, old Norbert!
He's technically true - the problem happened in the pitlane wen it came in, not on the track |

Ah - true enough, although I had assumed that the reason the car was pitting might have been due to the non engine related (!) FIRE.

No, apparently it was a build up of heat while stationary that caused the fire

About 6 seconds a lap slower than Alonso's V-10!
Oh brother I hope the teams get that sorted out by next year or we'll have GP2-II. One set of tyres per race and V8's will catch Champ cars up quick in Montreal. |

I seriously doubt they will be anything like 8 seconds "off the pace" come Melbourne.
