NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter said the hospital was prevented from saying more while awaiting the arrival of the driver's wife, Jada, who was traveling from South Carolina after attending her grandfather's funeral. NASCAR sent a plane to pick her up.
How much tragedy can one get? |

Watching the Busch Race yesterday was eery... In the Pre-Race interviews everyone looked concerned and didn't have much to say. I haven't seen Mikey talk like that since Dale passed away. Get well soon, Jerry!

This is already looking like being another bad year like 2000. I just hope Jerry is ok, the sport doesn't need this, not after barry, fermen, roy herron, daijiro etc.
This from autosport.com: NASCAR driver Jerry Nadeau was airlifted from Richmond International Raceway with what NASCAR called "potentially serious injuries" after a crash in practice for the Winston Cup race at the speedway. Nadeau was reported to be in a critical condition, but the type and extent of his injures was not disclosed, with doctors at the hospital deciding to wait until all family members were notified of the situation. NASCAR vice-president of communications Jim Hunter said: "Jerry Nadeau has been airlifted over to the Medical College of Virginia for further evaluation. The doctors have told us there is the potential for serious injuries. That's all we know." Nadeau spun and crashed in the first and second turns of the Richmond oval, hitting the outside wall with the left-rear corner of his car. Medics cut the top off the car and spent nearly 15 minutes trying to stabilise and remove the driver. Nadeau's neck was immobilised and he was placed on a backboard before being taken to the ambulance. |

It looks like Jerry's going to pull through. He's got feeling and movement in all his extremities, he's communicating with doctors, friends and family, and his vitals are good. Someone ought to lose their job over the sealer at Richmond, it's a miserable surface to race on. |

Mea culpa... Well, actually, it's the AP's fault... Things may not look so promising.

I didn't see video of the wreck, Joe, but I think he went in tail-first on the driver side... pretty much the opposite of the impact the HANS is designed to protect against... I could be wrong though, not having seen the wreck...

The HANS is just one little tool... It can only do so much, and to expect miracles from it is foolish. Believe me, if there was something that could magically prevent serious all serious injuries without being too cumbersome or interfering with the sport, I'd embrace it completely.
I did see the video quite a few times... He got up out of the groove, spun around, and slammed the wall with the driver's side, and more to the front that the rear. The HANS won't do anything against blunt force traumas, and the driver's side must have had some intrusion or a partial collapse to cause the chest injuries, unless his belts were too slack and he got flung really hard against the belts themselves or the side bars of the rollcage. But his injuries will heal with time. It's when your neck or your head is injured, like poor Steve, that you never really come back 100%. |

I don't want to be negative at all, I hate what happened to Nadeau, but unless there has been new info released as to the extent of Jerry's injuries, I feel that we will find out that he has severely injured his head like poor Steve did... so far I have only seen that he didn't have any skull fractures, but that doesn't imply very much about what kind of impact/decel his brain may have undergone... most of the shop rumours down in Mooresville have Jerry in pretty rough shape. I really hope they aren't true...

Black box info from NASCAR say he hit the drivers side at 160 G's. With that force- he is lucky to be alive.
Semi-concious, Not able to speak. Small movement, but he has to be manupulated to do so. They are unsure of the memory portion of his brain. They are playing tapes of races on the RV in order to jog his memory. I think that Jerry won't be returning to racing this year or next. Probabally never. |

Yes, the black box data showed that Nadeau G-Force level was at 140 which is consider lethal. Thank god, Nadeau still lives today with the Hans and other safety devices in the car.

It's realy strange, the footage I saw of the incident made it seem that it wasn't as bad as some huge wrecks where drivers have walked away from-for example Ryan Newman's at Daytona etc. The forces of nature are very deceiving. I did notice at the start of the Winston that the drivers seat mounted head support-to the left of the drivers crash helmet all seemed to differ in size. Some were well cushioned while some seemed small and almost an afterthought. I would have thought that a standard size would have been implemented - I presume it helps reduce drivers heads moving to far sideways?
