Surfers Paradise Statistic

Whether you may be aware of it but Surfers Paradise has the uncanny feature of producing a new winner of the event every year of it's 14 year history so far. Here is the 'Honor Roll' so far.

1991: John Andretti
1992: Emerson Fittipaldi
1993: Nigel Mansell
1994: Micheal Andretti
1995: Paul Tracy
1996: Jimmy Vasser
1997: Scott Pruett
1998: Alex Zanardi
1999: Dario Franchitti
2000: Adrian Fernandez
2001: Christiano da Matta
2002: Mario Dominguez
2003: Ryan Hunter-Reay
2004: Bruno Junqueira

Very good statistic, that.

John Andretti in an IndyCar seems like a whole world away from the current era!

Welcome Afro_dud, that sure is a great statistic. Going into the 2004 race, Herdez had 2 of the 4 previous winners in the field - both won the race as rookies despite not making the championship top 10! I guess this is now one of the few races Bourdais is 0-for-2 in?

Yes, it appears they did. The reason Dominguez won the 02 race was that that race was the race with the big pileup at the start where adrian fernandez suffered a broken back/neck (can't quite remember) and the whole event, start to finish, was run behind safety car. Paul Tracy and Micheal Andretti were both in line to win that race but fuel mileage caught up with them and they both had to pit with 3 laps left behind the safety car leaving Dominguez the winner.

That 'race' was a bit of a joke really - Swimmer's Paradise would've been a more apt name for the venue.

Well done on getting the hang of our quote system straight away - a lot of new posters don't. I'm pretty sure I didn't, and I work with computers.

I've used quote systems on many different forums and it did take me a while to get used to it at these other places and i too also spend a majority of my time working with computers

Yeah, he did a handful of races back in 1993 and came real close to becoming the first person to crack the 300 mph barrier in his first ever Top Fuel run.

If I'm not mistaken he reached the semis in his first event and managed to reach a final in another (which he finished second in) before deciding to put his NHRA Top Fuel career on the shelf.
