Money?

The talk about driver salaries got me thinking...

How do teams/drivers earn money in F1? Do they expect sponsorships to cover everything? I never heard about prize money, so I just assumed there wasn't any.

When Bernie Ecclestone first entered Formula One as an owner of Brabham, he succesfully campaigned to vastly increase the prize fund. I can only assume that huge amounts of prize money are still at stake.

Prixe money? Well that is all very secret. most of it is closely related to the commercial deals they have all signed up for (the Concorde agreement). The amoutn the get from this depends on many factors including their results. They get a lot from this, but most still comes from external funding.

There has been examples cited (although not confirmed) that the difference between, say, 5th and 6th in the constructors championship can be worth millions. It is all guesses though. The technical and sporting regs are freely available, the commercial regs? If you've got a copy please lend it me.

Prize money is paid out on the final championship positions each year, although not for individual race result AFAIK. Teams also get money for their participation, which (as has been discussed at length in the past) is higher for long-standing teams.

Have you any idea when prize money for individual races ceased to exist? It was definitely paid out during the seventies, but i have no idea what happens now. Bernie's battle with race organisers to increase prize money is described at length in "Bernie's Game" by Terry Lovell.

Prize money for individual races still exists. It is determined by a complex formula of qualifying positions, positions at 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 distance in the race and the finishing position.
