That crazy Australian GP flag chequered flag waver
I was just watching the 1989 Australian GP when it was pouring rain, and I was watching the chap in the yellow/brown jacket who comes out and does his bit with the chequer flag.
He certainly is a braver bloke than me stepping out into the track to wave the flag in pouring rain... Who is he? Is he still around? Really loved watching the old Adelaide races. Last edited by Sodemo; 31 Dec 2004 at 16:05. |

I don't know how is he now, but his name is Glen Dix.
I'm not sure if he did every Australian GP at Adelaide (except 1991 which was red-flagged) and also first ever Melbourne GP in 1996. |

The difference with Glen was, the way he bowed and flagged everyone as they passed, made them ALL feel they had won! Sorely missed!

Yes, he was very spectacular.
I'm not normally in favour of the flagging being done from on the track - but he made it an art form. |

Not as brave as Toto Roche who used to start F1 races with a flag while standing on the track infront of the cars.

The flag waver at Monza downright scares me year after year.....it seems to end in a bit of a stare out between the flagger trying to get in front of the car for the TV shot, and the driver trying to get as close to the pit wall as possible to wave to the team....
Get them in a box away from harm, I say! |

Didn't he fall out with the Melbourne GP organisers because they wanted to temper him? Or was that an exaggerated story?

I recall it was wildly exaggerated.

I remember him well.....I always found it amazing he didn't dislocate his arm, given the ferocity and technique he waved the flag with!

he was pretty cool wasnt he
from what I remember Glen decided of his own accord to retire his flags and enjoy waving at the kiddies out the window of the retirement village instead Not sure if he jumped or he was pushed though ? |

I met Glen once when I was a kid, would have been about 20 years ago, out at the karting track at St Kilda if I recall.
Yes his flag waving was awesome |

Glen is still with us. Although retired and ageing he still waves the flag at events here and there. The Classic Adelaide and Pedal Prix come to mind. He lives at Victor Harbour. These days he devotes just about all his time to charity work, involving Camp Quality. He recieved an OAM in this years Australia Day Honours for his services to motorsport and charity.

Last I saw him was a few years ago at Mallala cicuit where he was a caretaker of the track. He gave us that same spectacular flag wave in our Formula Vee race - I couldn't help but have a chuckle when I crossed the line, all that was missing was Murray Walker's wail!
A definite highlight, a pity that people like Glen (and Murray for that matter) have become a very rare breed... |
