British Rallycross Gp 1989
I found in my loft a program to the British Rally-X GP for 1989. The 1st Rally-X event I ever attended. It was a real shame because all I go to see were some practice laps before the event was fogged off!. There were loads of cars in many classes back then but just look at the Supercar entry list.
British Rally-X Grand Prix at Brands Hatch 3rd December 1989 Entries in equiv Supercar 4x4 Class Dermot Carnegie Metro 6R4 3.0 Will Gollop Metro 6R4 3.0 Michael Shield Metro 6R4 3.0 Steve Palmer Metro 6R4 3.6 Richard Hutton Metro 6R4 3.0 Rob Gibson Metro 6R4 3.0 Aidan Creegan Metro 6R4 3.0 Vic Moyce Metro 6R4 3.0 Mark Flaherty Metro 6R4 3.0 Tom Bisset Metro 6R4 3.0 Guy Williams Metro 6R4 3.0 Dennis Biggerstaff Metro 6R4 3.0 Tiff Needell Metro 6R4 3.0 Guy Williams Metro 6R4 3.0 John Moloney Metro 6R4 3.6 John Fernandes Metro 6R4 3.0 Pauli Silvennnoinen Metro 6R4 3.0 Arnie Rasmushaugen Metro 6R4 2.8 bi-turbo Jonothan Palmer RS200E 2.1t (Ford factory entry) Trevor Hopkins RS200E 2.1t Gary Baker RS200E 2.1t Martin Schanche RS200E 2.1t Pekka Rantanen RS200E 2.0t Thor Holm RS200E 1.8t Barry Squibb Escort Xtrac Turbo 4x4 1.9t John Welch Vauxhall Astra Xtrac 2.1t 4x4 Dimi Mavropoulous Audi Sport Quattro 2.2t Terje Schie Peugeot 205 T16 E2 1.8t Herbert Breitender Audi Sport Quattro S1 2.1t Olle Arnesson Audi A2 Quattro 2.1t Sven Lestander Audi Sport Quattro S1 2.1t Peter Brown Ford Escort 2.0t 4x4 Bert Bredoin Audi Quattro 2.2t Marc Ver Eecke Audi Quattro 2.2t Michael Quaife Ford Escort 1.8t 4x4 Peter Harrold VW Beetle 2.1t 4x4 Jan Boander VW Beetle 4.0 4x4 Jan Langenberg Ford Escort Turbo 4x4 |

I have always said this 89 GP had the entry potential to be the best rallycross event ever, such a shame. I was stood up at druids when Martin Schanche decided to entertain the crowd by driving all the way through the gravel trap sideways. There were 4 of my favourite Audi Quattro Sport S1's on the entry that day as well.

Saw Tiff on Sat at St Mary's watching the Saints. Sure Tiff drove the following year in the same 6R4 when 'the bloody steering broke' and he crashed on the knife edge. Think he came second in B final one year. He also had a few goes in a Duckhams Nova modified car but had problems with contact.
On top of the 4wd cars there was always a decent 2wd entry all mixed in with the 4wd's the Nova challenge cars would proberbly have been there? Couldn't rallycross do with another 'Nova Challenge'. Remember one of the Brabhams (son of Jack) raced at Brands in the Nova Challenge (could have won from the B final) - think the same year that Mick Bird entered the developement 'Corsa Challenge' that is now raced by Dave Ward, although much modified. All the above could be rubbish, but its a long time ago. |

Can you remember Evind Rosnes with the hand throttle on his Chevy Monza though, was it that year or not!
That was one of the features at Brands was watching the likes of Newbould and Bardy hang on to the tails of the supercars and often beat them! Tiff did quite well if i remember, not quite as well as JP did in the ex Welch Atrca or the RS that year but he was still bloody quick. Didnt Cor Euser have a go as well one year? |

Yep, Cor Euser (?) won the money in the 'fastest timed lap' event on the Saturday. I remember the Chevy Monza and Martinson in the BMW with the turbo F1 engine, Andy Bentza winning with the four door Audi 80, the 4WD Beetle's sliding through the Esses when it was much tighter and, the BDA fiesta's fighting with 4WD Porsches and Dave Pritchard qualifying for the A final in his A series Metro ahead of heaps of 4WD turbo cars, the X-trac escorts with the flames and black smoke, etc etc. Brilliant meetings! It could happen again if given a chance.

The Chevy Monza was the only car that could be heard along the knife edge over the noise of the 6R4's and the RS200's from the startline!
Arild Martinsen's BMW was reputed to be producing some 900BHP - it's the only car I've seen leave 4 black lines from the startline all the way to Paddock. That list of cars sums it up for me - that was rallycross. What we have today is good motorsport, but it's not the same for me. |

Yes that brings back memories. I remeber seeing it do the same out of the chicane going up tp druids. 2 huge thick black lines all the way up the hill!
Have yet to see it again on TV where I saw it on Grandstand originally Last edited by fullcircle; 20 Apr 2005 at 17:33. |

Sorry to be Pedantic but I think Bentza won in a purple and white Quattro, beating our own John Welch in that horrid wet GP in 85 I think.
Doesnt everyone seem to remember Martinsens BMW, it was a very silly car and did used to lay black lines from its tyres eerywhere, but it wasnt as powerful as Alamaki's 935 engined Porsche which was a totl#al beast, in fact I think the reason he was so fast later on in the Dalta and 205 was because he had to get that power crazed Porch around the tracks! BTW Bentza did build an 80 Quattro but it was rubbish!! My best memory is Bert Brodin in the S1 E2 backing off for the Esses and being able to hear the wastegate in the toilet!! I ran out to see what the gorgeous noise was,, proper power, proper cars and proper drivers!! |

IMO the 87 Internations at Croft has to be the best rallycross meeting ever 7. RS200's, 7. Porche 911's, 10. quattro's, 4. 6r4's, 2. Renault Alpine's, 1. Lancia Delta s4, 1. 205 t16 and loads of other wonderful and varied machines. The drivers Nittymaki, Alamaki, Arnesson, Schie, Holm etc etc, also Kenny McKinstry in a Escort 4WD and a chap called Dermot Carnegie in a 1600 Fiesta (top man). If anyone is interested in seeing the full entry list send me a pm and I'll sort it Quote:
Tiff Needell we don't need the likes of him. I remember bumping into him as he was leaving Brands before the finals had started. It was the meeting he drove Pat Dorans Escort cossie, and he was also doing the commentry for the BBC. I said to him "Hi Tiff youre not leaving already are you?" Tiff "Yeah" Me " Before the finals?" Tiff "Yeah well there's no point stopping, I broke my toy" The man went down in my opinion right there and then. Last edited by silver bullet; 22 Apr 2005 at 22:59. |

My first memory of Rallycross was going to Lydden (home of Rallycross) in the early 80's and watching the likes of Franz Wurz (father of F1 driver Alex Wurz) in an Audi Quattro taking on Escort Mk2's and Porsche's etc.
I also remember Arild Martinsen's BMW (awesome car) but does any remember his Lotus Sunbeam ? Talking about lots of power Matti Alamaki's Porsche was another you can't forget and then my favourite his Lancia Delta (I've still got a few of the Rally-X GP's on video with commentary by Murray Walker). Another Porsche I remember was John Greasley (he went onto be British GT champion). That car looked fantastic in it's black colour scheme. One of the best British drivers was John Welch in his various Xtrac's. And how can we not mention Martin Schanche (Mr Rallycross) and his amazing array of cars (especially his RS200). Best place to watch him was always at Lydden. This is bringing back good memories. I'd better get that car finished and get back out there. These are the guys I grow up admiring and they're the reason I chose to race in Rallycross. |

Having spent most of my marshalling life on the rallycross startline under the supervision of the almost God-like Gnomex, I have to say that being on the grid with a full set of Group B cars like the above must be one of the most priviledged places in marshalling.
You can tell you've had a good day on the grid when you finish the day with a cup of tea that spills everywhere and the answer to every question is "Eh?" - the combined effect of being that close to that much horsepower does your nerves and your hearing in respectively. A friend of mine was in the recovery lorry that collected Tiff and his car that day - I think he wound Tiff up on the way back to the pits by constantly saying "Sniff Tiff's Diff". I think this was also the day that Tiff decided to do a nice burnout for TV on our nice clean swept grid - the fresh cut tyres left several piles of rubber, which I then delivered back to Tiff in the pits and told him next time he wanted to do burnouts to go and do them somewhere else Ahhhh - the smell of nostalgia...........is tinged with Castrol R and bacon rolls. |

But yes indeed - a grid with a full set of Group B cars. Being "Chief Startline" for my sins was a great honour - but also a weighty responsibility. The nights before Rallycross GP's were spent in a state of high tension thinking through all that was to come - each year seemed to pass off OK though. |

THe thing I used to love about those days was walking round the pits just before the guys were gonna go and line up.
Why you may ask, because they all used to have little rollers than they used to warm up the transmission and they used to sit there and go through a little routine on the rollers, i had so many proper horsepower experiences walking round the pits watching the likes of SChanche,Gollop,Shield, Mavropolous etc warming up, was amazing. I remember dying to have a bit of bread handy standing behind Terje Schies 205 at Croft once as it was spitting flame from the pipe, could have had a lovely bit of ELF flamed toast!! I know its sad but "those WERE the days" |

Totally off-topic, and for that I apologise - but it's so good to read all this great rallycross stuff I was building a rwd Fiesta many years ago, before going bankrupt... lol Are Arthur Debenham and the Rallycross trust still going strong?

I thought I heard Arthur say at the Superprix that the Rallycross Trust was no longer viable and that the stock and van had been taken over by someone to sell off. Correct me if I misheard him?!

As I understand it the Rallycross Trust is still very much alive. However, it was simply the van was too expensive (and old) to take to all events and it was passed over or sold to another director of the Trust.
In my humble opinion, the trust is still a very important part of the rallycross scene in the UK. |

I travelled from Germany on a special leave to attend that meeting and used some prescious money that I saved to by my flight to the UK ( via RAF). You can imagine what I said when I saw the fog on the Sunday

And I remember standing on the back wall of the pits and watching Martinsen's BMW coming off Hoopy's Drop, and while still very sideways banging up all the cogs in rapid succession into top gear.....and all while still very sideways.... But as has been said, for me, Alamaki's yellow bi-turbo Porsche will always be the ultimate Rallycross beast for me.....outrageous vehicle. I will always remember at an ERC round at Lyddon Hill, when he came off of Chessons drift and nailed it smoking all four tyres all the way down to the finish line... And yes again, I'd agree that 1987 Internations at Croft was probably the best rallycross meet I ever attended. |
