FF1600 Chassis Choice - An Emotive Subject

A hypothetical question . . . so as not to worry the CFF1600 brigade.

If 'my friend' was looking to purchase a newer FF1600, pre the Zetec cars, what would the recommendation be?

My friend is not totally confident he fully understands when the Zetec change over happened (1994?) but has been looking through the results of the various championships running across the UK to try to hunt out a pattern of chassis, manufacturer and model, versus competitiveness . . . obviously the odd balls such as Joey Foster in an RF78 have been removed. It seems that RF92's and SC92's come out as the popular and competitive choice but are these monoshock cars that are difficult to set up without "many hours in the laboratory" . . . maybe an earlier car would be better who knows.

My friend had a run in a, dual shock modified, RF92 on Monday at Brands Hatch and was pretty happy with the morning but felt that setup and driving style would need to be altered to get the best out of the car . . . too much understeer for his liking nor was it receptive to his usual opposite lock arm out waiving to the crowd style when provoked . . . witness trip into gravel trap at the bottom of Paddock Hill Bend, and the top of Paddock Hill Bend and in the middle of Paddock Hill Bend oh and at the exit of Graham Hill Bend.

Has he considerd a four wheel drive vehicle...great for getting out of gravel.

Or the best ever and easy to setup SC92.

He tells me "you've got to go beyond the limit to find the limit" . . . and only one excersion required extraction assistance from the pretty sick Brands Hatch 4WD Merc

Tripple J Motorsport.

What have you 'in stock' that he could have a sit in (static not driven of course) . . . if you are based in BH then you are only 5ish minutes from him in North Chailey (Work in Shoreham . . . for www.ricardo.com)

Think I might give up on the third person ruse . . . not foolng anyone!

Reynard 89, most of the frontrunners in the NW championship use these. John Farrell has one currently for sale!

You can't really go wrong with a 92 swift or a 90 Van Diemen. These were pretty much the best in their day and I'm not convinced that they have actually been improved upon a great deal since then.

Arguably not/possibly, but the parts are defiantly easier for the FR90-2, everything is available most off the shelf.

I have to say that I have only ever driven two FF1600s a Jamun 89 and a Reynard 89 so not a great deal of experience but the difference with the Reynard is unbelievable. The Reynard is very progressive and forgiving and it gives you the confidence to push harder. The stability under breaking is also very impressive.

Get a Van Diemen RF88/89.

They are proven 3 times in the last year that they can beat the class a cars and run at the front, in the right hands.

Peter Daly's 89 is spot on, consistantly at the front in MS and Silverstone.

Nigel Thompson in all CFF championships. Has won 5 championships this year and ran 3rd at Mallory outright with only Carroll and Grady ahead.

Tom Bradshaw took Kevin Donnelly's RF88 round OP Fosters on a 1.04.34 last year.

We recently picked an 88 up on the continent recently for less than £2000. Plus spares are cheap and easily available from ourselves and URS.

But if your looking for a new car, as JJJ Motorsport said, its got to be a Ray.

I have only driven Van Diemen Pre Zetec cars properly, an 89 and an 90 most recently at the WHT. (desperately trying to ignore my horrendous performance in the wet) but in the dry it was amazing!! 63.2's very easily! Given the choice I would go for a 90 VD! But people know their worth, so be prepared to spend money on it!

If it come down to it, go for a Reynard over a VD. A reynard is built to use, not to sell. VDs are very cheap by comparision and pretty nasty to work on (90/91 aside). If its pre 90 the Reynard all the way, post then go for a 90/91 VD or a 94/95 swift, 92/93 are good, but they don't suit drivers of every size.

89 reynards have done most of the 'consistent' winning in the NW class C since class structure changed in 2005 ......
2005 1st Dave Franklin 89 reynard
2006 1st Tom Bradshaw 89 reynard 2nd Dave Franklin 89 reynard 3rd Rob Whelan 89 reynard
2007 1st Dave Bailey 89 reynard 2nd Stuart Jones 89 reynard 3rd Lee Hannam 89 reynard

It was such a shame this season that 3 of the front runners in 89 reynards did not compete for various reasons otherwise an 89 reynard would have probably taken the spoils yet again
