Spa Francorchamps Sept 14th-15th
Anyone going? . . . .we're heading out for the weekend, tagging along with a Lotus Cortina . . .taking my MK1 and MK2 as well, cant wait, Ive not been to Spa before.

I'd love to go but I'm working the 14th and karting the 15th.
I would be karting at Spa the week afterwards but I've got to go to Uni instead.... I'm a bit annoyed at the date clash! |

Well I can guarantee it wont be a wasted journey. I did it a couple of times in my Dolomite and loved it. Can't go this year but hopefully next! BTW you should be able to run open pipes as they don't noise test!!

I value my ears Chris! and both my cars are road goers (the racing one is scattered between my workshop and a few lockups!)

We'll finally be making the trip at last, assuming nothing breaks at Goodwood (fingers seriously crossed). Will be running a straight through side exit exhaust, so may well take some earplugs...

Hi guys - hubby Jason and I will be there both taking part in Barry's one hour race in our beautiful Lancia Beta. This will be our third event there and we are really, really looking forward to it. Our racing this year has been rather curtailed due to various engine maladies to our three racing cars so this will be a very welcome race weekend.
Hope we have better luck than last year. The race went brilliantly well, but our tow Jeep broke down and had to be left in Belgium and we almost had to leave the Beta in Belgium too. However got it towed back to Blighty by some wonderful friends and raced the Beta and my race car at Castle Combe the next weekend. Hubby had a major off and almost demolished the car in torrential rain and on the very same lap my engine dropped a valve. Three broken cars in one week - is that some sort of record? Anyway, looking forward to the time off work, the trip there, meeting old friends (and making new ones), the beer, the chips oh yes, and the racing! Safe journey there everyone. Louise K |

The Capri is eligible and its in Spa 24hrs colours. Sadly I've spent a fortune on it and its not going as fast as it should so I refuse to race it until I find the problem. Also it needs extra tankage for a one-hour race and until its sorted I'm not willing to spend the cash needed.
The FIA reference is because they (the FIA) are now saying that you can't race abroad unless you have an international licence (I qualify for one of those) and you have an FIA car (which I don't). It seems that along with anybody who doesn't race an FIA car I won't be allowed to race at Spa again because of the FIA. |

interesting points Peter, Im travelling over in a group with an appendix K Cortina. I was thinking of appendix K when building the GT, but I think it would be so much more difficult to make it even vaguely competative on a shoestring budget Ive gone against the idea. but surely I'd still be FIA approved
As for an International License . . . . .Im just thinking about getting my national B! |

The point about App K is that the car should be an original racing car built in the period for which it competed. Unfortunately most cars are replicas based on chassis that were (let's say) another version when they were made.
MGB's are a great example. There were never as many "original" competition B's as there are racing now. But the real difficulty is that events such as the six hours won't survive without support races and there being a limited number of cars which comply with the FIA regs I feel this may be the last time it runs. Unless the FIA changes it's mind. All of which puts financial pressure on Spa circuit so it could all be linked to the F1 no tobacco problem. |

BTW. FIA apporved is not the same as FIA App K.
To be FIA approved you need to build it to certain safety criteria. Its got nothing to do with the technical sporting regs. |

I thought FIA approved was safety, ie cages/hernesses etc, and App K an ammendment for more (allegedley) 'original' cars . . . typically pre 66? it all gets a bit vague when you read the sporting regs for historic saloon cars . . .quite how much you can get away with is a tricky one, what Ive read is if it doesnt say you are to assume you cant do it, although Ive seen some pretty extreme mods on a few cars.

Yep, that's exactly my point. My car is post 65 (1982) so it doesn't meet any FIA sporting regs. It does comply with FIA safety requirements (Or it does with a fully auto extinghuisher system).

that opens another bag of worms . . . .a MK1 Cortina is elgible to be appendix K even if its a 66 model . . . .because it was homologated before the cut off date.
from what Ive found out there arent any genuine MK1 GT's left, race or rally. . . .not that I could afford one if there was! |

that makes sense! I run a mk1 on the road, with a 1700 crossflow a fraction of the price and just as much power, I wouldnt use a lotus if I had one
Id probably change my mind if I won the lottery though home time now . . . .got an exhaust manifold to weld back together ! |

As i understand it you can race abroad on International Histric if you are racing pre 71 cars. If not upgrade to International C. I personally think this is the best allround licence as you can do National A events. Ironically if you have a National A and want to race pre 71 abroad you have to pay another £60 to get an Internation Historic addendum. Its ironic as you only need 5 signatures for Int Historic yet 10 for National A!
Cant post 65 cars get FIA papers? I thought that you just have to comply to the homogolation for yr car. My car has FIA papers but was not racing at the time (although of course the model was) |

You can race at Spa on a National A. I ditched my "C" years ago becuase I didn't need it. I could upgrade. But that isn't the point. The whole problem (allegedly) revolves around historic competiton and the FIA's requirement to only allow cars which qualify (in their eyes)and that excludes my car and anybody like me.
The car does comply with Group homologation, (it has to for the G1 Championship) but it doesn't fit with any FIA championship regs as far as I know. If anybody in the FIA reads this perhaps they can clarify the new proposals. |
