Would you be prepared to drive a....

There it was, burbling past my place of work as I came out of the door. Gleaming black coachwork, fine chrome detailing, lightly rodded. A very definite V-8 rumble emanating from under the massive bonnet.

I was in love. I drove something like it many years ago - a distant relative, anyway. I knew it didn't handle, and the steering was all to pot, but I did love driving that car.

And this one - well, this was the cat that got the cream. I want one, and I want one right now this minute. The only problem is, would the neighbours want me living in their street?

So - would you, could you, should you drive a Ford Zodiac Mk4 HEARSE!!

I know I would....

A friend of mine once owned a hearse,a Ford of some type, however he found that it didn't bother the guys but not one of his female friends would get in it,as a result of this his lovelife became non existent and it was sold!

Valve Bounce has been held in scrutiny for further testing
Many, many years ago, hearses were very popular with the surfing set. They were ideal for puttig surf boards inside, and they were usually in very good condition when they were put on the market. All tehy had to do was a cheap paint job, usually lurid colours, put some curtains up, and a mattress in the back and nobody cared about the history of the car.

It wouldn't fit in the drive!!! Might make a good tow-car though.

Bruce MacCall the PR man for chrysler in Windsor collected hearses. He had one that he used to go shopping with, it was complete with a wooden coffin. He would use the coffin to store his groceries in. As far as I know nobody ever stole anything from his car.

Ray Bell should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
The thought of hearses always reminds me of my uncle's description of one hurrying through Camden, NSW, and the coffin sliding about in the back as it cornered briskly. Perturbed at the thought, he said, "Give me a fast death and a slow funeral, thanks!"

Historic Racer Peter Hitchin, though, drove a 1920s Rolls Royce Hearse from England to Australia and in India befriended a local family on the way through. Ironically, it was the hearse that was to bring them back together.

One day I was driving with my brother and we were headed to Peter's for a visit, Brian knew very little about him and I mentioned the hearse and the trip from England. "Oh, he would be the bloke such and such is looking for then..."

Turns out the Indian Peter had befriended had migrated to Australian and worked with Brian, but had lost touch with Peter over the years and had been trying to find him...

"Harold and Maude"-a wonderful film from '71 I think....

Oh no no no!

Definately could not drive a Hearse! Just would not do it for me I'm afraid. I would only end up scaring myself!!!!

I have always said that it's not just what is on the outside that matters but more so what is under the bonnet, but in this case V8 or no V8 I could not drive a hearse. Plus I probably wouldn't be able to see pass the speedo (I am quite a small person) !!!
