TC's V8 vision
Interesting to watch the interview with TC on the Big Pond Sandown coverage where he spoke about his prefernces for a future V8 Calender.
Saying they are effectivly locked into 13 rounds, he would like to see 2 rounds per eastern seabord state (Qld, NSW, Vic) and 1 for everyother state with the balance being offshore. Also the Calender wasn't announced at andown as is tradition due to some last minute hurdles to overcome........ |

I hope they take a pragmatic view of the Konica schedule, why SA gets 2 rounds is beyond me....

....such as Motorsport New Zealand this coming Friday in Wellington.
We all pray that there will be a level of understanding between them that continues with the NZ V8 round being the success that it deseves. |

.....and as JDI said one hurdle is the Puk/WRC clash (by 1 week) and apparently he has more tracks interested than meetings so he holds the upper hand.

I for one will be really ticked if the Konica Minolta's or whatever they will be called don't come too Mallala next year.
Sure they get to race at Clipsal, but are not the main attraction are they as is the case also at QR. Just my opinion though. |

GTR, I Agree, One Konica round for SA and 2 rounds of the level one series. SA has the best attended races in the series we deserve more races.

That's an interesting number
So he wants 3 off-shore events. In Vic, that means it's Sandown + either Winton or PI In NSW it's Bathurst + either Oran or E/Creek In Qld, it means Indy stays on the calendar. Plus Tas, Clipsal, Barbagallo & NT one each. NZ & China, + 1 Middle Eastern race (probably). Seems a much more balanced calendar. I'm a Sydney-sider, and even I accept that having 4 out of 13 rounds in NSW is too much. Perhaps for NSW & Vic they could do a rotation, whereby one year Winton gets the V8s and PI gets 'Lites', then the next year they swap, PI gets V8s and Winton gets Lites. Similar deal between Oran & E/Creek, plus Wakefield. NSW already has 2 rounds of the Konica championship anyway, and with budget constraints it's not feasible taking them to NT or WA. Might be nice to get them to Tassie each year though. Maybe they could do an alternate year swap with Mallala or something. |

Word has it that TC is trying his hardest to get the supertaxis to Bahrain/Dubai next year as well as Shanghai.
It seems that in the long run his aim will be to have our V8s like the F1 and go International, with the Konicas to become the home-based V8 series like Euro F3000. |

Surely the more they race outside of Australia and NZ, the less relevance to the Ford and Holden brands and therefore less return for the manufacturers.
How long will Ford and Holden stay behind an event that is being taken away from their target markets? |

Holden/Opel/GMH/Ford are all worldwide brands, particularly across the States and Europe (mainly Opel), so i'd say that brand coverage wouldn't be much of a problem. They might even want to bring in supertaxis after they see them.

Yes they are, but in china and bahrain?
Actually, one of the car mags took a BA XR to the states, turned quite a few heads and got a good response. But supertaxis must cost both a packet, and helping GM or Ford outside of this market doesnt help them turn a buck. |

But it does help TC's wallet grow, which is the main reason the show is going overseas.

International recognition/marketing/media for sponsors is what will rake it in for the teams, so even though it will cost more to run the series international, it will enforce larger sponsors to take part in the teams, therefore the money will be found. No doubt TC has pencilled in freight & logistics contracts/deals with shipping partners as per the NZ round, next will come hotel deals and what not.

TC has been in talks with people to have a race on the west coast of the States as early as 2006. Next year Shanghai is a definite as Asia, and Bahrain/Dubai (cant remember which one it is, pretty sure its Dubai actually) is on the cards as an 80% chance for 2005. That takes care of america, middle east & asia. Then in 2006 we'll have NZ back.

Are races in america, middle east and asia sustainable though. Its all well and good for avesco to cash the cheque short term, but where will the races and the category be in 5-10 to 10 years, remembering that there is already to be a world touring car championship starting next year.

I think if TC was really smart, he'd back a serious effort for a start up V8Supercar series in the states. It seems the most logical place for expansion, not as an extension to our own V8Supercar series, but for its own home grown series running to our rules.
Project Blueprint a chev, dodge, taurus & *gasp* Camry and let em' go at it. The yanks really don't know what they're missing. Probably a nightmare to bring into being, but another series run elsewhere, under the same rules in parrallel would rock. But I think it would take at least a one or two races in the states to sell the package to enough teams/manufacturers. Big risks but the gains could be enormous... Exporting the series, doesn't nessessarily mean giving them *our* races. |

Exactly... 5L V8's rear wheel drive, manufacturer support? Nascar for all that's good about it, isn't much in the way connected to the manufacturers car. V8 Supercars isn't exactly production racing, but its a hell of a lot closer than Nascar or TransAm racing.
Racing in the states needs a good kick up the arse I reckon and there's no better series to deliver that kick in my opinion. |

People wouldn't watch it in the states. Bugger all people watch Trans-Am why would the NASCAR junkies decide to move to watch our V8's. The USA is a waste if they even go after it. Going off shore at all is a waste if you ask me.
