Cooper T79
The T79 was a one-off being driven by McLaren in the Tasman series during 1964/5. John Love then acquired it and running the car in South African F1 races. It eventually ended up with John McCartney who ran it in hillclimbs and sprints in the 1980s manily in the North of England.
What was the chassis number? Possibly FT-1-64? |

According to my notes from that time it was FL-1-65
|

It was definitely FL-1-65 but there is some doubt about whether it should be designated T74 or T79. I prefer T79.
Tiny Littler drove it in libre for a few years when it first came back to the UK. John got it one or two owners later. Allen |

The car was at Silverstone last week and according the info sheet it was chassis F1-1-64.

Correction
I mean F1-1-64 would be a T69 or T71 or T73.
But Allen Brown has FL1/1/64 as a T74. This car has been known in recent years as a T79. Alan Brown |

Paul Edwards drove it at Goodwood in '01, fresh from many years storage. He said it was like a dragster, quick in a straightline but a beast in the corners!

Dear All,
I am the owner of the ex Norman Racing Cooper T71 - F2-2-64, Tony Hegebourne's Berlin GP winning car. We are in the middle of its restoration and are putting some latter rear end modifications (post '66) back to "standard". I am writing this post to see if anyone knows the whereabouts of F2-1-64 or F2-3-64, the two sister cars? Thanks, David. |

I have a Cooper T7? that may be one of them but presently has no chassis plate. The car first appeared in Canada in either 1967 or 1968. I have found race results from 1968 and 69 with an SCA ,Hewland and 10 JAP wheels on back Details – chassis was never hit all details are original except roll bar – no other welding on chassis . Most everbody I have talked to , that is into Coopers with a similar car ,believes it is a special order because of the details of the build .Some say it is a T75 but a few have said a T73 and one expert F2 - 3- 64. Woody of the CCC says the car has elements of the T72 and some of T75 . . He also has never seen one with the engine access panel opening in the right rear side. . This was a factory original detail . Details Built for a 30degree or so Ford (with side access open to distributor ) or BRM ( I don't know how a BRM mounts). Had SCA in period Hewland Mk4 # 287 5 speed Right hand shifter No front reaction rods 3 gas tanks – one to left of driver- no one knows of more than 2 - must be for long races - suggests it was a special order F2 battery box F2 wheels Flitch plates at dash and seat bulkheads ( stiffeners ) Had a chassis plate in correct location – tits are still there Small dash Lower chassis rear anti roll bar Short engine cover with bubble and mesh over carbs High Centre exhaust The car is presently awaiting restoration once I know the correct build . It is complete less engine and nose and has been apart since 1970 I'll post pictures when I learn how or can send them to someone for posting Any help ,leads etc would be greatly appreciated. Hi John,
Nice to hear back from you. You might recall that we were in correspondence some time ago via e mail. Your car looks like either a T72 or T75 to me, not a T71. My car (F2-2-64) and the sister car F2-1-64 had the full width dash, and no lower rear anti roll bar. I have two questions that perhaps you could help me with..... my car had the rear of its chassis modified post 1966, and we are in the throws of putting it back to standard. Could you provide me a dimension of how far rearwards the chassis extends beyond the back face of the top rear cross member (mounts the gearbox), and also, do the gearbox mounts on the cross member align to the cross member chassis mounts, or is there a step up in height? Of course I remember and will get you the chassis measurements . In Sports Car Graphic ,Oct 1964 there is a 3 page article by John Blundsden which states that " Normands has dispensed with the Cooper triangular instrument panel in favour of a full semi-circular filling the full cockpit width inboard of the windshield". The pictures show Tony Hegbourne #58 with the front reaction rods yet in the Hippo book pictures the car # 30 without them . Woody and I are stuck as the car has some T72 details and some T75 details just as you mention John |
