Audi's best
So which was the best of the Audi's Le Mans wins? They've dominated this century so far.
What makes the win great? They pummeled the opposition, it was close, they had a great fight back, the car was cool, the driver was legendary, it was my first year? What is your reason? Overall privateer and factory wins included. Think cool wins rather than what a shambles sportscar racing is. |

2010, I always think it as the ultimate David vs Goliath, or rabbit vs turtle in terms of the ridiculous performance difference between 908 HDI FAP and R15+. The slow but steady tanks ultimately triumphed over fast but exploding rockets, which also had had numerical advantage on their side with the extra Oreca. On top there was interesting contrast when Pug boss broadly smiled as Audi hit trouble (contact with BMW GT2 IIRC), yet when Pugs started to break apart Ullrich was shaking hid head like a professional.
What an amazing race it was (in all of the classes) |

2004 and 2005, only years where the winning Audi where underdogs and the element of the Audis superiority was not a factor, but the drivers and teams where.

Not in the same way. Sure Peugeot where faster, but it was two different philosophies of running.
For ‘04 and ‘05 there where other R8s running - some by bigger and more well funded teams (Audi UK). Here it was equal material, but it was the team effort making it happen. Added to that, ‘05 had the Pescarolos running with the Peugeot element (pure raw speed) |

2011 because 2 cars crashed. Big performance from Benoit Treluyer in the sunday morning during a quintuple relay!

2008............Audi should have been laps down before the rain came - stunning performances and absolute determination from the team, Howden, Ralf, Nishy, Dindo and TK kept them in the hunt, the rain did the rest.

2011. I almost put 2010, but that one is more aptly described as Peugeot's worst.
Treluyer's mammoth quintuple stint and Lotterer's last triple stint with two fastest laps were, even by Audi's high standards, extraordinary. Peugeot still should have won on pit strategy, but the relentless pace of the #2 - backed up by a flawless pit crew - was too much. Wurz binned it at Indianapolis and the fat lady had sung. |

Interesting thing with 2011 was also that it was the one and only race Audi won all year (and even longer than that when all ILMC races are counted for). Sort of similar to the Porsche - Mercedes dynamic in 1998.

The 2011 908 was by far the more reliably quick car*, and even at Le Mans they made the most of their powertrain advantage by trimming out the downforce and running an extra lap while only losing significant time in the Porsche curves. Audi really had to make the most of their downforce/lap time/pit stop advantages, which is why 2011 was my choice.
*The 2011 R18 had a slight pace advantage, but with a much narrower setup window. A sign of things to come for Audi. |
