what could be the problem ?
I think im beginning to have a problem with my car.
a year ago I had a flat battery so got a new one , everything has been fine for the past year but this week my car is starting to play up a bit. sometimes it doesnt want to start , it turns over but doesnt go , now im sure the battery is fine but now im wondering if my starter motor or alternator are on the way out ? mostly it starts first time without a problem but 1 out of 10 times it plays up , usually if its been sitting for an extended period of time like 24hrs without being driven. I usually drive it every day but sometimes it sits for a day and thats when the trouble seems to start , once it fires up and I drive off I dont have any problems for the rest of the day starting it. all this makes me think the alternator is playing up , but im no mechanic and honestly wouldnt have a clue. is there as test that a mechanic can do to determine if the alternator or starter motor are on the way out ? i certainly dont want to replace the starter motor as on an old car i had it cost me an arm and a leg but was hoping someone has an idea as to what the problem maybe. of course if I take it to a mechanic it will start no problems for them because I have driven it there and everything is fully charged so im kinda stuck trying to work out the problem at the moment. any clues ? P.S Great my 9000 posts here on ten tenths and i waste in on my stinking car LOL |

You might want to view THIS Thread as I have posted some methods of evaluating battery/alternator problems. Most any DC voltmeter will be suitable.

Thanks Bear , Ive replaced the battery and everything is fine now so Im assuming it was just a dud battery I had.
But am going to check the alternator just in case thats why the battery went flat |

Your local tyre place should have a meter they put on the alternator Marcus, that should tell whether its putting out enough power or not.
