GT90's

When this was announced, and through the early rounds, it was one of my dreams come true.

Growing up as a kid during the 90's seeing all manner of beautiful GT cars racing around really gave me a passion for motorsport so it was great to see these cars racing again.

Then it just died on it's arse. The guys with the McLaren's, F40's and so on stopped turning up and it was basically a couple of Porsche's and Venturi's with very little coverage of events.

So does anyone know if it's still running and what the fields are like this year? (The site doesn't really seem to be updated too often).

Such a shame because I'd assume the majority of cars eligible for the series are still around and in running order? 911 GT2's, Viper GTS-R's and the likes are definitely.

Anyone have an idea where cars like the Elise GT1 are nowadays? One ran in the series when it first started I know that much.

I think they host one or two races a year in France, don't they? The grids have been extremely small, though. I am a little surprised it didn't catch on really, since there were lots of Porsches, Venturis, Vipers and even McLarens around. Plus cars like the Stealth, Marcos and Lister have been run pretty regularly since then.

Maybe its a little too early to look for 90's sportscars in historics? Maybe if it were mixed with 90's LMPs at a Le Mans support race it may gain more entries?

They've started allowing pretty much everything in now to prop the grids up including Saleens and Ferrari 550 Maranellos!

I'm disappointed that it never lived up to the early promise - taking it off the FIA GT bill was a big mistake IMHO.

The second and final round of 2010 was cancelled due to lack of entries. I seriously doubt the series will return.

You're probably right with regards to cost, certainly the F1 GTR in all it's forms would be unbelieveably expensive to run.

That picture actually shows a 1996 GTR though, GTR #12R.

The other roadgoing GTR's should be:

#06R (1995)
#07R (1995)
#11R (1996)
#13R (1996)

Figured I'd find this thread and bump it.

Seems from next year the GT90's are coming back in the form of the Blancpain Revival Series.

Hopefully the fact it's being properly promoted by the official sponsors and placed on the calendar with the GT2/3/whatever series we might actually get some decent entries, certainly there are plenty of cars out there from the 90's that are raring to go and just need an owner/drivers who want to race them.

I hope there'll be the usual SRO streaming. With those cars they don't even need any commentary. I'll be happy to watch them drive round and round.
