Jesper OH should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
1985 All-Japan Touring Car Championship

Hello to all fans of international group A touring car racing of the 1980’s and early 1990’s. I’m researching the period and currently I’m doing a bid to cover the Japanese scene. From 1985-1993 group A regulations covered the All-Japan title, replacing group 5 silhouettes before itself got replaced by Super Tourings for the 1994 season. All of what is written here has a bit of a question mark over its credibility, as I have little factual information except for these two sources:

http://www.jaf.or.jp/CGI/msports/res...year=2008#1985
http://ms.bridgestone.co.jp/database...egory04?cid=20

The JAF site has about 99 % complete race results for every race of every season, while the Bridgestone site also has top-10 point’s positions. This site also used to include an English version of these results that has disappeared since then, but thankfully I had the presence of mind to download those results!
Qualifying results are missing for a lot of the earlier seasons, which could tell of non qualifiers, as the WEDS Sports page tells of, but only for the team itself.

http://www.weds.co.jp/race_report/su...t/archive.html

The races:
Round 1: 1985-06-02, Sportsland Sugo (114 laps of 2.655 km = 302.670 km)
Round 2: 1985-06-16, Tsukuba (147 laps of 2.045 km = 300.615 km)
Round 3: 1985-08-04, Nishi Nippon (107 laps of 2.816 km = 301.312 km)
Round 4: 1985-10-13, Suzuka (51 laps of 5.914 km = 301.614 km)
Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (177 laps of 4.410 km = 780.570 km)
Race distances seems to have worked around a 300 kilometer, two driver format, with the Fuji finals being a 5 hour timed event.

The classes:
Division 1: 1001-1600 cc
Division 2: 1601-2500 cc
Division 3: over 2500 cc
Toyota Starlets appear in some rounds and some times they seem to have raced outside the championship, while at others they were classified as division 1 cars!?

The points:
Pos – cl. – o/a
P1 – 20 – 9
P2 – 15 – 6
P3 – 12 – 4
P4 – 10 – 3
P5 – 8 – 2
P6 – 6 – 1
P7 – 4
P8 – 3
P9 – 2
P10 – 1

In terms of teammates ending the points in a tie, there seems to have been a rule of distance covered over the season to differentiate the drivers. Thus the driver with the most kilometres covered ending the tables ahead of his or her teammate. Naoki Nagasaka (917.009 km) thus beat teammate Kazuo Mogi (736.073) despite the fact that they shared the same car over the entire season. Is this correct?
This is what the Bridgestone motorsport site says: http://ms.bridgestone.co.jp/point/20_1985.html

..and in another format (position, driver in Japanese (driver in English), car, points in championship (individual points in the five races):

1. 長坂 尚樹 (Naoki Nagasaka), BMW 635CSi, 97 points (NC / 29 / 29 / 23 / 16)
2. 茂木 和男 (Kazuo Mogi), BMW 635CSi, 97 points (NC / 29 / 29 / 23 / 16)
3. 星野 薫 (Kaoru Hoshino), Toyota Corolla Levin, 89 points (29 / -- / 24 / 21 / 15)
4. 辻本征一郎 (Seiichirou Tsujimoto), Nissan Silvia, 68 points (-- / 16 / 12 / 20 / 20)
The translation at http://translate.google.com/translate_t?sl=ja&tl=en says Tsujimoto Itirou Susumu – a reverse of the name!?
5. 津々見友彦 (Tomohiko Tsutsumi), Toyota Corolla Levin, 62 points (02 / 26 / 18 / 16 / 00)
6. 見崎 清志 (Kiyoshi Misaki), Toyota Corolla Levin, 60 points (-- / 26 / 18 / 16 / 00)
7. 高木 政己 (Masami Takagi), Toyota Corolla Levin, 58 points (-- / 19 / 24 / ?? / 15)
8. 浅野 武夫 (Takeo Asano), Toyota Corolla Levin, 51 (59) points (21 / 10 / 10 / (8) / 10)
9. 都平 健二 (Kenji Tohira), Nissan Skyline RS Turbo, 48 points (18 / 17 / 13 / NC / NC)
10. 萩原 光 (Hikaru Hagiwara), Nissan Skyline RS Turbo, 48 points (18 / 17 / 13 / NC / NC)
Names marked in red, means that the Google translater don't agree with my sources.

This will be all for now, but I will get back with a try at establishing a full entry list for the entire season. So far this thread is intended to cover the 1985 season only, with separated threads for each of the other eight seasons. What I’m mainly looking for is race reports and general information about the 1985 championship. Especially a more complete points table would be very helpful. I have tons of questions regarding driver and team names, but they will be asked later. Until then I hope you might have a bit more knowledge about the 1985 All-Japan Touring Car Championship

Best regards

1985 – Division 1 entries from Honda

First a batch of Honda Civics. The 3 door AT-series was homologated from April 1st 1985, but no car raced at Sugo round 1 and only solo entries for the next two rounds, and only then did the Civics appear in any numbers. But two overall poles and an overall victory was impressive.

#5
Entrant: 週刊プレイボーイ・シビック (Weekly Playboy Civic)
Car/homologation: Honda Civic AT (homologation A5268, 1590 cc?)
Tyres: unknown
Driver: 村松 (Yasuo Muramatsu)
Driver: 中谷 (Akihiko Nakaya)
Driver: 清水 (Kazuo Shimizu)
Notes: Likely to be a Civic AT, as alternatively only a 1335 cc Civic SL was homologated at the time. First names of the drivers taken from future seasons, so any confirmation would be appreciated!

Round 2: 1985-06-16, Tsukuba (18 / ?)
First Honda Civic to appear in Japanese group A, and thus the only one to appear at Tsukuba.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was the Honda Civics of 1985. Any information to substantiate or change any of the above will be appreciated very much. Driver and entrants names in Japanese are a black art to me, so if you’re somehow in the know, let me know. Also I would like some comments on the background to the Weekly Playboy, Meiwa, Endless, FET, Top Racing entrants and/or team names – who was behind, as I don’t see Hugh Hefner hanging around the pits in Japan during weekends of 1985.

1985 – entries from Volkswagen

Few European cars were entered in Japan before the BMW M3/Ford Sierra RS Cosworth entered the scene during 1987, but Volkswagen was there from the beginning. I know of a 1984 Volkswagen Golf Cup in Japan – the Golf Mk. 2/(E19) – this might be a lead to the nature of these cars.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

#13
Entrant: RS.COMPE GOLF/17E/VW17E (RS Compe Golf)

Driver: 斉藤 新/斎藤 for R2 (Shin Saito/despised different “spelling” it still says Saito)
Driver: 木多 淳/木田 淳 (Jun Kita)
Dispesed different ”spelling” for round 4 at Suzuka, the Bridgestone site still says its Jun Kita driving at round 4.

Results:
Round 1: 1985-06-02, Sportsland Sugo (8 / ?)
Round 2: 1985-06-16, Tsukuba (DNF)
Round 3: 1985-08-04, Nishi Nippon (20 / 3)
Round 4: 1985-10-13, Suzuka (11 / 2)
Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (DNF)

Unknown weather this entry was a div. 1 or 2. in round 1, 2 or 5. At least a division 2 entry in round 3 and 4, where they finished.

Tyres: Dunlop
Driver: 岩城 光一 (Koichi Iwaki)
Driver: 山本 郁二 (Ikuji Yamamoto)
Since the second generation "B-version (on the road at least) was only ever homologated as a 1.8, it could have been that type. But the homologation of the 1.6 "A-type" must have been aproved as a transfer from the old group 1 at some stage - RAS Sport ran a couple of 1.6/B's for Volkswagen Belgium during the 1983 ETCC.

Results:
Round 1: 1985-06-02, Sportsland Sugo (14 / ?)
Round 2: 1985-06-16, Tsukuba (DNF or 17 / ?)
Round 3: 1985-08-04, Nishi Nippon (9 / 1) winning division 2
Round 4: 1985-10-13, Suzuka (DNF or 21/ ?)
Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (DNF)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pictures of the Japanese Volkswagens would be very helpful, especially of the Scirocco, since it would tell weather it was a first or second generation car. Any relation to the Golf Cup could tell some more, so If you know…

At only 1.3 litres and the AE86 Corolla already homologated, what did these little RWD Starlets do in the A-JTCC of 1985? I have faint memories of group 2-style Starlets racing Nissan/Datsun Cherry’s until 1984 – is this a clue to the ’85 Starlets?

Jesper,
I think I can help you with some of this, but it already looks like it will be a lot of work and take a lot of time. I'm already reading and re-reading the posts you have made just to sort out where and what the questions are..........

I have access to photos of all the 1985 entries, and I'm sure that they will answer some of the questions that you have asked, but scanning them all will take an age. You will need to be patient with me.

Just a quick word about Japanese names; These can be quite tricky even for Japanese readers ( many Kanji can be read in several different ways ) and machine translations often make things worse! Personally speaking, I see lots of confusion amongst people who are mixing up family names with given names ( family name is usually given first in Japanese ) and to help avoid this can I suggest that you write family names in upper case and given names in lower case? I believe it helps a lot. So, for example you'd have Kenji TOHIRA and Kazuo SHIMIZU, and ( in Japanese convention ) TOHIRA Kenji and SHIMIZU Kazuo. Less confusing I think.

To get round the 'swear filter', can I suggest that you either drop the letter 'i' altogether ( giving 'YAMASHTA' instead of 'YAMA****A' ) or simply insert a * where the letter 'i' was ( giving 'YAMASH*TA' ) which at least fills in more of the gaps!
Actually, dropping that letter 'i' is not conventional when Romanising Japanese names - but it does make it read a little closer to the proper Japanese pronunciation.

I'll scan the Scirocco and Golf pics first for you. The Scirocco was second-gen I believe ( quad square headlamps ) and was LHD. The Golfs were all RHD, which could well point to them having a previous life in the Golf Cup(?).

Maybe best if I send these scans to you by e-mail. Can you PM me with your e-mail address please?

Thanks.

1985 – Division 1 entries from Toyota. The Corolla Levin name seems to be the general description, but at any rate it must be the 16V 3 door coupe, homologation number A5180, 1587 cc. A5179 was the 2 door version.

---------------------------------------------------------------

#7
Sponsor/entrant: ミノルタα-7000カローラ (Minolta Corolla α7000)
Car/Homologation: Toyota Corolla Levin AE86 (A5280, 1587 cc)
Tyres: Bridgestone
Driver 1: 舘 信秀 (Nobuhide TATE / 舘 trust 秀) driving round 1
Driver 2: 真田 睦明 (SANADA Akira Atsushi / SANADA 睦 discernment) driving round 1, 3, 5
Driver 3: 奥脇 (Rear side / Inner part side) driving round 2
Driver 4: 真田 (SANADA) driving round 2
Driver 5: 奥脇 絵里 (Rear Eri Waki / Inner part side picture village) driving rounds 3, 4, 5
Driver 6: 真田 陸明 (Lu Ming SANADA / Mutuaki SANADA) driving round 4

The English language Bridgestone files has results of this entry from rounds 1, 2 and 5 and in all three cases the pairing is Eri OKUWAKI (who is driver 1, 3 and 5), partnered by Mutsuaki SANADA (who then is driver 2, 4 and 6). In other words six different Japanese “spellings” account for the same two driver crew over the entire five rounds contested.

Results:
Round 1: 1985-06-02, Sportsland Sugo (4 / 3)
Round 2: 1985-06-16, Tsukuba (4 / 3)
Round 3: 1985-08-04, Nishi Nippon (DNF)
Round 4: 1985-10-13, Suzuka (16 / 10)
Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (12 / 6)

The Minolta sponsorship made me think of the official TOM’S Toyota entries in both sports cars and later years of group A. Is this the case?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

My intent was to follow your advises regarding the translations, PZR, until I discovered I probably do it reversely of what think I was doing: I put the Japanese signs into the translator and have them translated into English. With regards to spelling family names in CAPITOL letters was my intention from now on, but as this first example shows, it makes little sense, at least for this entry! I will see what the next entries bring. Otherwise , thanks for your contributions as well as to those of Frank.

I use on-line translators, but only two, so I don't get too confused by differing results.

http://dk.babelfish.yahoo.com/
http://translate.google.com/translate_t

I do a copy-and-paste job from my Excel file, put it into the relevant box, ask for the appropriate translation - Japanese to English in my case - and Voila!

Well, not so voila at times, as PZR has pointed out. The Google machine has a higher rate of hits than the yahoo version, in my experience.

I will return a little later with some more Corolla entries.

Jesper OH should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Here’s all the Toyota Corollas in one post. Since my first post of the Corollas I have discovered that a Trueno Sprinter AE86 was homologated as A5275, eligible from July 1st 1985. With it’s pop-up head lights and lower front end, it must have be easy to spot from the rest of the AE86s, but usually the JAF records don’t tells the difference. The fact that most of the following car are called Corolla Levin is mainly due to the Bridgestone files says so.

---------------------------------------------------------------

#7
Sponsor/Entrant/car: ミノルタα-7000カローラ (Minolta Corolla α7000)
Car/Homologation: Toyota Corolla Levin AE86 (A5180, 1587 cc)
Tyres: Bridgestone
Driver 1: 舘 信秀 (Nobuhide TATE / 舘 trust 秀) driving round 1
Driver 2: 真田 睦明 (SANADA Akira Atsushi / SANADA 睦 discernment) driving round 1, 3, 5
Driver 3: 奥脇 (Rear side / Inner part side) driving round 2
Driver 4: 真田 (SANADA) driving round 2
Driver 5: 奥脇 絵里 (Rear Eri Waki / Inner part side picture village) driving rounds 3, 4, 5
Driver 6: 真田 陸明 (Lu Ming SANADA / Mutuaki SANADA) driving round 4

The English language Bridgestone files has results of this entry from rounds 1, 2 and 5 and in all three cases the pairing is Eri OKUWAKI (who is driver 1, 3 and 5), partnered by Mutsuaki SANADA (who then is driver 2, 4 and 6). In other words six different Japanese “spellings” account for the same two-driver crew over the entire five rounds contested.

Results:
Round 1: 1985-06-02, Sportsland Sugo (4 / 3) Okuwaki / Sanada
Round 2: 1985-06-16, Tsukuba (4 / 3) Okuwaki / Sanada
Round 3: 1985-08-04, Nishi Nippon (DNF) driver 5 / driver 6
Round 4: 1985-10-13, Suzuka (16 / 10) driver 5 / driver 6
Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (12 / 6) Okuwaki / Sanada

The Minolta sponsorship made me think of the official TOM’S Toyota entries in both sports cars and later years of group A. Is this the case?

Entrant/car: TOYOTA AE82
トムスカロ-ラFX (TOMUSUKARO - The FX / [tomusukaro] - [ra] FX)
Car/homologation: Toyota Corolla AE82 (A5274, 1587 cc)
Tyres: unknown
Driver: 鈴木 利男 (Toshio Suzuki / Suzuki interest man ) Toshio SUZUKI
Driver: 浅井 順久 (Hisashi Sunao Azai / Sequential Hisashi Asai)

Results:
Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (16 / 8)

One race only for this FWD Corolla. Not quite sure of the identity of the second driver, but Toshio SUZUKI does look likely as the first.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

#11

Driver 5: 高木 政己 (Masami Takagi / Takagi Masaki) Masami TAKAGI
Driver 6: 中谷 明彦 (Akihiko Nakaya / Akihiko Nakatani) Akihiko NAKAYA
Read as: (names from translations) names from Bridgestone files

Results:
Round 1: 1985-06-02, Sportsland Sugo (1 / 1) Hoshino / Momota
Round 2: 1985-06-16, Tsukuba (2 / 1) Tsutsumi / Misaki
Round 3: 1985-08-04, Nishi Nippon (3 / 1) Hoshino / Takagi

Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (8 / 2) Hoshino / Misaki / Takagi

Note 1: the JAF-files only credit Hoshino/Takagi for the Fuji race, while the Bridgestone-files mentions all three.
Note 2: sister car to #12, I presume.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

#12
Entrant/car: TRAMPIO LEVIN
Car: Toyota Corolla Levin AE86/A5180, 1587 cc)

Round 3: 1985-08-04, Nishi Nippon (4 / 2) Tsutsumi / Misaki
Round 4: 1985-10-13, Suzuka (3 / 3) Tsutsumi / Misaki
Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (21 / ?) Tsutsumi / Misaki / Ito

Note 1: less successful sister car to #11, I presume.

Entrant/car: ウェッス゛スホ゜-ツスフ゜リンタ-

Car/Homologation: Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86 (A5275, 1587 cc) rounds 4 and 5
Tyres: Bridgestone
Driver: 浅野 武夫 (Takeo Asano / Takeo Asano) Takeo ASANO
Driver: 木村 雅範 (Masanori Kimura / Kimura elegance example) Masanori KIMURA
Driver: 江尻 旬子 (Ejiri,旬子 / Ziyunko Ejiri) Junko EJIRI

Results:
Round 1: 1985-06-02, Sportsland Sugo (2 / 2) Asano / Kimura / Ejiri
Round 2: 1985-06-16, Tsukuba (7 / 4) Asano / Kimura / Ejiri
Round 3: 1985-08-04, Nishi Nippon (8 / 4) Asano / Kimura
Round 4: 1985-10-13, Suzuka (7 / 5) Asano / Kimura
Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (10 / 4) Asano / Kimura

Note 1: car was a Sprinter Trueno for at least the final round. I didn’t realise this version of the AE86 was homologated separately from the 3-door Coupe. This version featured pop up head lights and another, lower profile of the nose section, to the best of my knowledge.
Note 2: entry from Weds Sport tuning company.
Note 3: sister car to #77.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

#25
Entrant/car: ADVAN COROLLA
Entrant/car: ADVAN COCOROLLA
Entrant/car: ADBAN カロ-ラ
Entrant/car: AE86

Tyres: Yokohama
Driver: 鈴木 恵一 (Keiiti Suzuki / Suzuki Megumi one) Keiichi SUZUKI
Driver: 土屋 圭市 (Keiichi Tsuchiya / Tsuchiya 圭 city) Keiichi TSUCHIYA

Results:
Round 1: 1985-06-02, Sportsland Sugo (DNF)
Round 2: 1985-06-16, Tsukuba (DNF)
Round 3: 1985-08-04, Nishi Nippon (DNF)
Round 4: 1985-10-13, Suzuka (13 / 8, but DNF?)
Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (6 / 1)

Note: I believe a black and red Advan (brand of Yokohama) #25 Toyota Corolla appeared at every single race during the nine years of Japanese group A racing. This claim is still unconfirmed, mind you! Other cars, like BMW M3s and Nissan Skylines, appeared in the same Advan colour scheme, but was not necessarily from the same team.

Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (15 / 7) driver 2/driver 3

Note 1: no notes on this car, including the type of Corolla – picture would be nice. The entrant or sponsor name in English would be of great help.
Note 2: Driver 1’s name correlates to other Suzuki’s, so I’m sure he’s “A” Suzuki.

Driver 6: 勝又 良文 (Yoshihumi Katsumata / Victory and it is good the sentence)

Results:
Round 1: 1985-06-02, Sportsland Sugo (10 / ?) Morozumi / Nishizawa
Round 2: 1985-06-16, Tsukuba (13 / ?) driver 3 – only one driver!?
Round 3: 1985-08-04, Nishi Nippon (22 / ?, DNF?) Morozumi / driver 4 / driver 5
Round 4: 1985-10-13, Suzuka (12 / 7) Morozumi / driver 6
Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (DNF) Morozumi / driver 6

Note: no other info, but here is a few speculations: The Rookie Levin entries name, Seiji Morozumi as the only fixed driver of the entry, and a host of one off drives for his co-pilotes, could suggest that this was a sort of learners car for young talents, with Morozumi as their guide – a bit like Jochen Mass at Sauber-Mercedes, where he guided Mrs. Schumacher, Wendlinger and Frentzen during the 1990 World Sportscar Championship. This is only guess work, so any information on this entry would be very nice.

----------------------------------------------------------------

# unknown
Entrant/car: TOYOTA AE86
Car/homologation: Toyota Corolla Levin AE86 (A5180, 1587 cc)
Tyres: unknown
Driver 1: 桜井 勤 (Tsutomu Sakurai / Sakurai working hard/employment) ? ? (SAKURAI?)
Driver 2: 奥山 賢一 (Keniti Okuyama / Kenichi Okuyama) ? ? (OKUYAMA?)

Results:
Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (DNF)

Note: no other info, not even at start number for this entry. Didn’t even post a time during qualifying for their sole race at Fuji.

----------------------------------------------------------------

To the best of my knowledge, this gives a total of 11 different Toyota Corolla entries over the 1985 A-JTCC – most of them racing on a regular basis.

1985 – division 2 entries

Besides the Volkswagen products, that seemed to interchange between division 1 and 2, there were a few more definite division 2 entries around in 1985.

Drivers name read: Japanese signs (translations from google/altavista) Bridgestone file

Results:
The races:

Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (14 / 1) Muramatsu / Tsujimoto

Note 1: Driver 2 and 4 must be the one and same. The JAF results from round 2 only mention the family name of the drivers.
Note 2: Since the Silvia #2 “became” a Skyline after round 1, and this entry had it’s first race at round 2, this could be the one and same car.
Note 3: Tsujimoto finished the season as 4th overall in the championship.

------------------------------------------------------------------

#14
Entrant/car: MAZDA SA22C/ WOORX-7
Car/homologation: Mazda SA22C Savanna RX 7 2+2 (A5713, 1146 cc * 2)
Tyres: unknown
Driver: 池沢 さとし (Satoshi Ikezawa / Ikezawa with it does,) ? ? (IKEZAWA?)
Driver: 中村 誠 (Makoto Nakamura / Nakamura sincerity) ? ? (NAKAMURA?)
Driver: 野地 広行 (Hiroyuki Noti / Roof board Hiroyuki) ? ? (NOTI ?)

Results:
Round 5: 1985-11-10, Fuji (DNF)

Note 1: the SA22C designation of the car suggest that the car was of the original group 1-transferred-to-group A homologation, from way back in August 1978. A Never version, Mazde Savanna RX7 Custom (2+2) was homologated as a proper group A car from February 1984 as A5195. I don’t know the technical differences between the two, so, can anybody help?
Note 2: Mazda’s were rare in Japanese group A, and not entirely 100 % sure, but this is the only entry from Mazda, during the nine seasons of group A.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Not a lot of cars in the middle division, and always blown away by the baby class!

Jesper, I don't think there is any difference between the two apart from normal developments over the years. 5713 is full of group 2 amandments, which are missing from 5195 obviously.
I would treat them as the same car.

I have a suspicion that the Brodie Starion you list there co driven by Takahashi may well have been Brodie's (or one of) own cars? Takahashi shared a car with The Brode at one of the TT's didn't he?

Could Ralliart have invited him/BBW out to gauge how their own cars were faring?

That's an interesting point there, Chunterer. Just checked with Frank de Jongs site, which says Vern Schuppan co-drove the BBW car at the '85 TT and Barry Sheene did the honors the following year. Just a bit strange then, that Brodie was the one driver left withourt a drive in the race itself

A look at the '85 Macau might also tell a story, as Kevin Bartlett, Michael Lieu and David Brodie raced a car each.
Bartlett and Bradley Jones were both racing for what the 1985 Bathurst year book calls a Bartlett-led Ralliart team. Initially a one car effort, but bolstered to two at Bathurst. Japan Air Lines was among the sponsors, so at least the flight tap should have been covered!

As mentioned in an earlier post the Fuji race was the Japanese group A debut of the car, and bringing in three already complete cars does in hindsight make some sence. Interesting question there, but as of now, speculation.

Brodie and BBW definitely had 2 cars in '85- the second car appeared at a couple of BTCC rounds, (Silverstone GP for Vern Schuppan and the last round at Silverstone for Takahashi and Schuppan shared the car at the TT- at the risk of wandering off topic, I think both cars were entered, but only one appeared).

As Jesper said, Brodie also appeared at Macau a couple of weeks after the Fuji race, as part of a 3-car team with Kevin Bartlett and Michael Lieu- I wonder if it was in a Japanese Ralliart car he used at Fuji and Macau, one of Bartlett's Australian cars, or one of Brodie's regular pair?

Note: no other info, but here is a few speculations: The Rookie Levin entries name, Seiji Morozumi as the only fixed driver of the entry, and a host of one off drives for his co-pilotes, could suggest that this was a sort of learners car for young talents, with Morozumi as their guide – a bit like Jochen Mass at Sauber-Mercedes, where he guided Mrs. Schumacher, Wendlinger and Frentzen during the 1990 World Sportscar Championship. This is only guess work, so any information on this entry would be very nice.

Co-driver for round 2 was 西沢 (Nishizawa, / Nishizawa) ? ?
A slip in my notes.

Correction / confirmation of romanised names:
Driver 1: Nobuhide TATE driving round 1
Driver 2: Akira SANADA driving round 1, 3, 5
Driver 3: Eri OKUWAKI ( female ) driving round 2, 3, 4, 5
Driver 4: Mutsuaki SANADA driving round 2, 4

Yes, the Minolta alpha-7000 title sponsorship was a complete colour scheme for the car - also seen on the #70 Corolla Levin and the #8 Celica in the 1985 season. I will scan photos of the cars and e-mail them to you.

Yes, sister car to #12 with very similar colour scheme but different layout of sub-sponsor stickers and different colour sunstrip.

Driver: Takeo ASANO
Driver: Masanori KIMURA

Yes, AE86 Corollas were marketed as LEVIN and Sprinter TRUENO versions and both homologated accordingly.
WEDS Sport were the race team of WEDS CO. LTD. who were wheel manufacturers, and they took part in Japanese Group A for 8 years.

Entrant/car: ADVAN COROLLA
Driver: Keiichi SUZUKI
Driver: Keiichi TSUCHIYA

Yes, they DNF'd at Suzuka - but still completed 45 laps so they still beat others that finished.

You are correct about #25 Advan-sponsored Corollas being present for all nine years, but of course the types of Corollas being used did change!

Yes, 'ROOKIE' Levin was a TRD entry with rotating 'rookie' novice driver line-up to partner MOROZUMI.

Race number of #86 was not serendipity, but purposely chosen for the AE86 Corolla Levin 'Hachi-Roku' as part of the model's Toyota and TRD publicity / sales campaign.

I believe this must be the #26 car in the race: The 'F.E.T Advan T.B.S. Levin'
Tyres: Yokohama
Driver 1: Tsutomu SAKURAI
Driver 2: Kenichi OKUYAMA

They retired ( reason: "Engine" ) after 103 laps.
'F.E.T' = Far East Trading, a company with performance / race car roots going back to the early 1960s.
'T.B.S' = ( I believe in this case ) Tokyo Broadcasting System, an independent TV station with several channels.

Will scan and e-mail a photo of the car to you.

Jesper OH should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
PZR, It makes absolute sence to me, so a big thank you. In fact, if it wasn't for the current 30 degree temperatures in Denmark, your obvious intimate knowledge regarding these matters, would blow socks off - only that it is too hot for socks, so you have to make do by blowing me off my feet only!

There's some good points made out in your posts. The obvious being the driver names additions or corrections, mention of female gender (I wouln't know from their names only), sponsor names and some time their products, and details like the #86 Rookie entry being numbered for what is now a lot more obvious reasons.
I'm noticing that the translations sometime work, at other times half of the name does, and at other times it doesn't at all. Only problem being, that without knowing what the translations is supposed to say, I still don't know if the translation is of any use. BTW, do you read the 'Kangi' (was that the word?) yourself or do you have very good notes?

I have made slight alterations along my posts, and at the moment I don't have any other ideas for improving on that, so keep the posts coming, please!

The current idea, at least for now, is to complete the entries with the Nissan Skyline entries and seven entries of unknown nature. From your (and other) contributions, I will then re-construct the results race-by-race in English, asking for qualifying results as a major addition to my current data. But that is still a bit into the future.

Jesper

PS I hope the tea was nice

1985 – the onknowns

Here’s a bunch of unknowns. Without a car manufacturer or model, I don’t know the division either.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#8
Entrant/car: エッセンシャルスタ-レ-ツ
(ESSENSHARUSUTA - LES – Sports / Essential star - [re] - [tsu)
Car/homologation: ?
Tyres: unknown
Driver 1: 野口 (Noguchi / Noguchi) ? (NOGUCHI?)
Driver 2: 武田 (Takeda / Takeda) ? (TAKEDA?)

Results:
Round 2: 1985-06-16, Tsukuba (16 / ?)

Note: not even first names for the drivers!
Note 2: #8 appeared in round 3, likely as a Toyota Starlet, and at round 5 definitely as a Toyota Celica Supra.

The end of this report. I got to think, PZR – would it make it any easier if I split the individual entries into a post of its own?
