Eddie Cheever is making a comeback

SpeedTV.com reports;

Quote:
Eddie Cheever Jr. will return to the cockpit of an IRL car after a three-year absence, sources confirmed Monday night.

Cheever, 48, will announce Tuesday that he will compete in at least the first four races of the IRL IndyCar Series season, including the 90th Indianapolis 500, in a car fielded by his Cheever Racing team.
Full article.

Didn't see that one coming, but I sure look forward to it

Typical, there are loads of great drivers on the sidelines, and they miss out for a vanity project from a driver who must be past his best.

Well, given the poor number of drivers on the grid, I can't see old Eddie depriving anyone; it's just one more diver who can only benefit the series.
On the other hand, as he declared hei commitment as a driver is only up to Indy, we can hope that someone else will replace him for the rest of the season: it's hard to believe that team Cheever will shut up shop after a few races.

Team Owner, can you help us with some hint?

Cheever doesn't owe a seat to anyone though. Personally I'm happy that there will be a Team Cheever car out there at all, and as Climb says, I hope it sticks around after the Indy 500 as well.

If you worry so much about the drivers on the sidelines, why don't you put a team together? Team Boots actually has a rather nice ring to it

Looks like the 500 will be the old man reunion with Andretti and now Cheever, maybe Rick Mears could be talked into having a steer.

Bluewolf has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
I think this is great -- For anyone who might think that Cheever is a bit too long in the tooth, those fears should have been quelched when you saw his fine performance in the 24 hours of Daytona -- This is one more element along with Michael and Marco and the Wheldon move to the Target team, that is going to make the IRL this year really fascinating to watch

Eddie feels that he needs to run the 3 races leading up to Indy to reaquaint himself with the cars. I've been told that funding will come from Eddies pockets but I seriously doubt that. I would imagine that if a driver comes with a sponsor he will continue after Indy but if he doesn't he still has his Grand Am team for the rest of 2006. Trust me when I tell you that Eddie needs to run laps at over 200 mph to get his body in race shape.

Guess he wasn't lying when he was telling people that he wasn't retired for the last 3 years.

It would have been good to see Carpentier in that car because he did such a good job last season in a poor car but Eddie is back and I wish him well.
