come on England !
England is a wonderfull country. The first that has to be mentioned is the people's love for animals. This stands besides everything else. The countryside is magnificient. The Germans made profit out of it to construct a 14 mile racing track named the Nordschleife. The French have their world famous cicuit de la Sarthe of 8 mile length. And the British ? They have Brands Hatch, wonderfull too with a very good racing atmosphere, but where is Englands track with a length of 8 mile minimum ? A Dutchman is looking for it and wants England to have its 24 hour motor race! It is a shame that the mecca of motorsport does not have one.....England has to move its party of the automobile to France !! Thats too crazy for words. Come on, motorheads optima forma, fight for a new circuit something like the old Francorchamps track in Belgium and get your two most magic turns of the clock well fixed !! It belongs to such an outstanding motoring country as yours is.
Who can make a Dutch racing full more optimistic about this one of Englands greatest shames ? The care about animals is perfect, stay like that, but England has to put an 8 mile circuit much higher on its urgenty list.....A Dutchman needs a breakout to the west after Nordschleife and le circuit de la Sarthe ! Who gives him the helping hand ? Last edited by heldring; 11 May 2004 at 14:56. |

Hello Heldring.
Just to correct you on one point. You wrote "A Dutchman is looking for it and wants England to have its 24 hour motor race! It is a shame that the mecca of motorsport does not have one.....England has to move its party of the automobile to France !!" Actually, we DO have a 24 hour race and it does involve French cars. The 24-hour 2CV race takes place at Snetterton on 18-20 June 2004. |

And we nearly did have a 15-mile+ circuit at Scarborough, but that unpleasant business in Europe put a stop to the plans... (But we got Oliver's Mount instead!).

A 12 mile road circuit was planned in Derbyshire in 1955.Unfortunatly debate in Parliament on the subject coincided with the Le Mans disaster!
Might be worth investigating why the many motorbike only circuits in IOM,N.Ireland + Olivers Mount cannot be used for cars? For club racing anyway.2CVs would be fun at Scarbrough. |

Didn't the TT circuit used to be used for car way back when. Its too dangerous for bikes (but I'm not a nanny state "it should be shut down" type); the consequences of a car filling over a wall into a pub car park are too grave too consider... NI - I guess that's the NW200? Similar issues.
Oliver's Mount - never been (yet) but its used as a car hillclimb. And 500cc F3 races there (way back when...). Probably too narrow for car racing - what about karts? Perhaps you could get small cars - 2CVs, Legends - around there? But the MSA requirements for a new circuit are huge (proper pit lane, run-off, etc, etc), which is why it'd be a struggle to ever get Aintree back - if Lydden or the like ever temporary closed, it would never get a "new" MSA licence. |
